COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) Voters on Tuesday made Missouri the 38th state to approve expanding Medicaid health care coverage to thousands more low-income adults.
Support for the constitutional amendment means that as many as 250,000 more adults could choose to be covered by government health insurance beginning in July 2021, according to estimates from the state auditor.
As Medicaid expansion is fully and expeditiously implemented so that Missourians are no longer forced to choose between putting food on the table and seeing a doctor, todays victory will be a true turning point in the history of the Show Me State, said A.J. Bockelman, the pro-Medicaid campaign manager.
The vote on health care, which was paired with Missouris primary elections, came as confirmed coronavirus case s have been rising in the state and the economy continues to suffer.

(38,958 posts)A mixed bag of results for me. Congressman Lacy Clay (who I always considered to be progressive) lost to the challenge from the left, Dr. Sam Page won for St. Louis County Executive (having an MD at the helm during a pandemic is probably a good thing), my State Senate and State House seats went to a local political family who I do not favor, my County Council seat removed one of the aforementioned political family members (who I couldnt stand) and the attempt by Florissant to impose a Use tax for online sales was defeated.
The wheels of government grind on with a few new characters.

Thanks for the information on the online sales tax loss. Missourians can live with that!

(13,535 posts)house has a history of overturning votes by the people, saying we didnt understand what we were voting for. In other words calling us stupid to our face. Happened last year or maybe it was 2018. Happened years ago when we voted to shut down puppy mills, yet they got it overturned. I am so sick of this.
I am certain that they will attempt to do to this just what they have done in the past.

(23,257 posts)it'll be nearly impossible for the Lege to override it. Best they can probly do is wiggle around it and maybe cut the ground out from under it somehow, but they will certainly attempt it. After the way they did the conceal-carry after we voted on Prop B in 1999, and the puppy-mill debacle, I have zero faith in their willingness to abide by the will of the people.

(4,723 posts)The state legislature will just overturn it. It is what they do. And the usual suspects will likely win reelection again, because piss off the libs or something. Lather, rinse, repeat. Welcome to the Show-Me state.
