Boeing Ships First 787 From South Carolina

Boeing Co. BA +1.47% on Friday delivered the first 787 Dreamliner built at its South Carolina factory, the first large commercial jetliner assembled outside of its historically significant manufacturing centers in Washington state and California.
The nonunion site is central to Boeing's ambitious production expansion for the jetliner, which has a backlog of 810 orders. Total 787 output is expected to increase to 10 a month by late 2013 with the North Charleston, S.C., plant supplying one of every three planned deliveries.
Air India, which took delivered of the jet last month, earlier received its first two 787s built at Boeing's Everett, Wash., factory, following an agreement over compensation for past Dreamliner delays. Delivery of the first South Carolina-built 787 was set for July, and slid as a result of the dispute.
The South Carolina outpost employs more than 6,000 workers and underscores Boeing's push for greater flexibility in its production. The factory's share of Dreamliner work is likely to climb in the years ahead as the plane maker looks to accelerate past its 10 a month target.
The company's main commercial-jet factories near Seattle will remains its core for the jet, said Jack Jones, vice president of Boeing South Carolina. However, Mr. Jones said the South Carolina factory signals a change the U.S. aerospace landscape.

(26,760 posts)When you go online to order your tickets... do you think it will tell you which plant built that particular 787?
The aircraft has a data plate located at the entrance door which will tell the location of final assembly.
It will either say Seattle, or Charleston.

(4,440 posts)That particular airplane was actually built almost four years ago, as part of the development program. They got final FAA approval in the design in April of 2011, but the design was in development and testing for a long time before that, with multiple test-bed airplanes being built and test flow before the first one was actually FAA approved.

(26,760 posts)It looks more like the HQ of the company (else it would be a 5th field of data rather than a permanent part of the plate)
But let's ignore that. Are you saying that you're going to buy a ticket and then on boarding the plane you'll check the label and then get off (forfeiting your funds and the ability to show up at your destination on time) ?

(60,567 posts)I wouldn't start criticizing the 787 for its quality until there is some actual evidence that it's inferior.

Of course, I'm not the one who, by extension, implied that are a death trap.

(351 posts)Whether built in Wa or Sc...faa and boeing design criteria must be met...
But give Sc time...they will watch the speea engineers go out on strike and renegotiate a contract which will leave them wondering...why not us?
What goes around....
