PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — BREAKING NEWS UPDATE

Hurricane Sally has made landfall near Gulf Shores, Alabama, as a Category 2 storm, bringing torrential rain over a coastal storm surge that forecasters said would cause dangerous flooding from the Florida Panhandle to Mississippi and well inland in the days ahead.

The slow-moving hurricane finally came ashore with top winds of 105 mph (165 kmh), the National Hurricane Center said.

___

A newly strengthened Hurricane Sally pummeled the Florida Panhandle and south Alabama with sideways rain, beach-covering storm surges, strong winds and power outages early Wednesday, moving toward shore at an agonizingly slow pace that promised a drawn out drenching and possible record floods.

This GOES-16 GeoColor satellite image taken Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2020, at 3 p.m. EDT., and provided by NOAA, shows Hurricane Sally moving slowly towards the coast from the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasters now expect landfall late Tuesday or early Wednesday near the Alabama-Mississippi state line. (NOAA via AP)

Hit twice with bad storms in a few years. Only bright spot, it is a strong trumpist area so it could be worse. drumpf will send them lots of help, unlike the people of CA and OR.

FEMA operated differently that time, handing out money to everyone for groceries because the electricity was out for 3-10 days and some areas were flooded even here in Jax. However, from what I understand, not much to anything was sent to the Gulf Coast when it was devastated last year (very rural and poor area) so who knows what that malicious moron will do.

since about 3:45 am this morning as it came onshore.

At least from what the chasers have shown from various locations at Orange Beach, AL and Gulf Shores, AL, it looks like it's more surge and flooding than major wind damage despite the 100+ mph sustained (with gusts) as the eye wall came in.

Depending on what this does with any (lack of) steering flow, it could be Harvey redux. There is a big Canadian High up to the north that is suppressing it to the SE (which impacts that track).

.....and is worried sick about her boyfriend in Pensacola. They were texting and his ceiling was starting to leak water, electricity was out, and he was feeling extremely stupid for staying. He is on the second floor of his apartment building and also is 10 miles from the beach, so he isn’t so worried about storm surge.

His cell service went out and now my daughter can’t talk to him at all. She is a pharmacy student doing a rotation at a hospital and said she was trying hard to focus on her work. But she is beside herself with worry. I told her that she could contact me at any time. I am helpless, really, but I can be a support.

I have been watching Pensacola news to try and stay informed.

I feel for anyone who is riding out a hurricane.
