Christian Group Finds Gay Agenda in Anti-Bullying Day
Source: NY Times
On Mix It Up at Lunch Day, schoolchildren around the country are encouraged to hang out with someone they normally might not speak to.
The program, started 11 years ago by the Southern Poverty Law Center and now in more than 2,500 schools, was intended as a way to break up cliques and prevent bullying.
But this year, the American Family Association, a conservative evangelical group, has called the project a nationwide push to promote the homosexual lifestyle in public schools and is urging parents to keep their children home from school on Oct. 30, the day most of the schools plan to participate this year.
The charges, raised in an e-mail to supporters earlier this month, have caused a handful of schools to cancel this years event and has caught organizers off guard.
I was surprised that they completely lied about what Mix It Up Day is, said Maureen Costello, the director of the centers Teaching Tolerance project, which organizes the program. It was a cynical, fear-mongering tactic.

Other countries have hate speech laws that would muzzle some of the coarser rhetoric you've heard from the US religious right. Not sure if you're willing to sacrifice that freedom though. As someone who's lived under the 1st amendment all my life, I go by Benjamin Franklin's saying "Those who would give up ESSENTIAL LIBERTY to purchase a little TEMPORARY SAFETY, deserve neither LIBERTY nor SAFETY."

(44,173 posts)We all know that is what they really believe; they view it as "God's punishment" for their "deviant lifestyle".
They are dancing around it, but that it what they actually believe.

(21,646 posts)although I have to say the idea of mix it up day seems like it would make someone feel more the target for all the other days
and will not break up cliques IMO

(2,964 posts)this strikes at the very heart of their "right" to teach their children to hate the proper people. the bullying is just the manifestation of the child's upbringing. and it SHOULD be manifested. christians are SUPPOSED to make the "others'" lives miserable.
their children must learn the proper, so-called, christian values, so THEY can grow up, and teach THEIR children to hate the proper people. this is a cycle that must NOT be interfered with. it is the very BASIS of their religion.
this is an affront to every parents right to lie to their children in the most vindictive and vicious way.
how DARE anyone interfere with a parent's right to turn their own children into hateful bigots!
