Nuclear energy technologies not yet suitable for Singapore: Senior official

Nuclear energy technologies used in many countries of the world has been assessed not suitable for the deployment of Singapore, mainly due to the small and dense landscapes of this city-state, a senior official from the Ministry of Trade and Industry said on Monday in Parliament.

The conclusion came from a two-year pre-feasibility study conducted by government agencies, external consultants and independent expert advisers.

Singapore has long been relying heavily on imported energy. They conducted this study aiming at assessing the feasibility of nuclear energy as an option to meet the country’s long-term energy needs.

Although the latest designs of nuclear power plants are much safer than older designs which remain in use in many countries, the risks to Singapore still outweigh the benefits at this point, the official said, adding that they will continue to monitor the progress of nuclear energy technologies, and to strengthen the capabilities to understand nuclear science and technology.
