Conservative women speak out for Senate candidate Todd Akin
Source: Kansas City Star
Ignited by the controversy that cost their candidate the backing of national GOP leaders, conservative and anti-abortion women rallied Wednesday in Kansas City to support U.S. Senate candidate Todd Akin.
Akins six seconds of misspeaking, I think, did us all a favor because, ladies, I dont think wed be here otherwise, said former Arkansas first lady Janet Huckabee, speaking to about 130 supporters, mostly women, at the Clarion Hotel Sports Complex.
The wife of 2008 presidential candidate Mike Huckabee added: People made me mad when they kicked our man when (he was) down. Its as simple as that. You expect it from your enemy. You dont expect it from your own.
Following Akins comment in an August TV interview that pregnancies were rare among victims traumatized by legitimate rape, the National Republican Senatorial Committee swore off funding his bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill, a Missouri Democrat. GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney urged Akin to drop out of the race.

(58,724 posts)I posted this in August:
Was flipping through the radio while driving today and heard one of them (Mike Gallagher I think?) speaking in strong support of Akin. Saying that has comment was misunderstood/manipulated whatever. Also attacking McCaskill in various ways.
I have a feeling there will be a backlash against the backlash and the RW troops will rally around Akin.
McCaskill supporters in MO would be wise to work extra hard to win this seat. It might not exactly be a cake walk, even if he stays in.

Sad that this is even close. Sadder that he will probably end up winning.

(5,763 posts)Missouri is politically split between its somewhat liberal cities, St. Louis and Kansas City, and its appallingly backward, regressively conservative rural areas. (Rural Missouri, BTW, is where Rush Limbaugh hails from, and he's part of a very prominent conservative family.) This gulf is severe. In the back country, people hearing what Akin says don't even see what's wrong with it and why anybody's upset with something so obvious.
The split isn't quite that neat. Populous suburban counties like St. Charles are terribly conservative. A huge conservative influence in St. Louis is the Catholic Church, most of whose members, I'm afraid, would agree with the implications of Akin's statements and wouldn't care about the erroneous details and ignorance.
McCaskill has the most difficult campaign. If her message appeals to the progressive cities, she might just anger the country-dwellers into showing up in droves. If she keeps to a more moderate message, the city population might not show up in enough numbers to overcome the rural vote.
Notice that she didn't go to the convention, and Obama has not been campaigning for her? That's because the best strategy for defeating her is to tie her to Obama, who the rural voters despise. Sad to say, just doing that enough in the week before the election can get the rural voters to stampede to the polls, no matter what Akin says.

(10,528 posts)McCaskil's strategy seems to be the least offensive candidate. A lot of Repukes in that state have begun to hate him or lose enthusiasm for him. I think I've seen more Turk and Mittens signs than Akin signs. He needs the Kochsucker $ badly but even without the cash he still won't lost by much.

(8,699 posts)Its not like he told someone to kiss his ass or something. He expressed a horrid, evil, and wrong-headed BELIEF about a women only getting pregnant from rape because she secretly liked it. That isn't a mistake. He is a disgusting and vile man and any women that supports him has issues of her own that need to be worked out with a therapist.

Any living female who would say positive things about Senator Akin after the filth he has spewed about women in general makes about as much sense as a murder victim chatting up their killer like they're old friends. It bothers me that there are even 130 Republican ladies out there that purport to Support this fool. Without having been there for her, ahem, speech of support, one cannot know if the utterly out of touch former Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee and the other husbands, who of course own these GOP women as property according to the Bible, forced each one to go to that Hotel and say nice things about a total and unrepentant sociopath.

More Rethuglican hypocrisy - when it was convenient for me, it was ok. But, now I don't want anyone else to have that same choice. People this f*cking stupid drive me crazy.

I'm tired of fucking conservatives whining about progress, and then they're always the first ones to take advantage of all the progress after democrats worked to get there. Women wouldn't even have a voice if it wasn't for progressives.
FUCK CONSERVATIVES.

(312 posts)non-Missourians like the former first lady of a neighboring state, other Republican politicians' wives (they all have wives, even those that are still in the closet, have to keep up images you know) probably from all over the south, their grown-up daughters, and maybe some maids, nannies, babysitters, and of course mistresses. Total number of 130 is attainable.
