Former head of Israels spy agency Mossad Meir Dagan seeks liver transplant in Belarus after European and US surgeons 'refuse to treat him'
Meir Dagan, the former head of Israels spy agency Mossad, has been forced to seek a liver transplant in Belarus, Europes most autocratic state, after European and American surgeons reportedly refused to treat him. He is said to be in critical condition.
Alexander Lukashenko, Belarus hardline ruler, leaked details of the highly-secret medical operation late yesterday, revealing the patients identity only as a former head of Mossad. Israeli media worked out that the patient was Meir Dagan, 67, who stepped down as head of the spy agency last year.
Portraying himself as the Israelis last hope, Mr Lukashenko, who has funneled his countrys resources into shoring up the countrys dictatorship, said that he agreed to take in the high-profile patient after America, Sweden and Germany refused. No one wanted to conduct this operation on a former head of the Mossad, Israeli media quoted him as saying at a news conference.
Israeli officials have in recent years encountered growing hostility on trips abroad, particularly in Europe, and Britain moved to tighten its universal jurisdiction laws, which allowed the prosecution of foreign officials in the UK for international crimes, after pro-Palestinian groups sought the arrest of former foreign minister Tzipi Livni during a trip to Britain for alleged war crimes in Gaza.

It sounds like Lukashenko was willing to push everyone else on the list down one spot. The article didn't mention any payment for this preferential treatment. Maybe it was just out of the goodness of Lukashenko's heart.

(42,239 posts)American and German doctors were asked to perform the operation, but no one wanted to carry out a liver transplant operation on a former head of the Mossad, Lukashenko said.
Channel 2 reported that Dagan had been set to undergo the surgery in India, but that the Indian authorities ultimately refused to treat him because of his Mossad past.

Dagan doesn't even sound that hardline. He called the idea of attacking Iran stupid. That puts him to the left of a lot of DUers.
This story doesn't make much sense.

I find it really hard to believe that there would be such a unaniminity of opinions among doctors to refuse to treat him (not to mention the ethical issues involved), even if you do assume Mossad is universally seen as monstrous.
