Soup kitchen in Ryan photo-op suffers substantial loss of donations
By Eric W. Dolan
Thursday, October 18, 2012
A charity that operates a soup kitchen in northeastern Ohio has faced an exodus of donors ever since vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan staged a photo-op on the premises.
It appears to be a substantial amount, Brian Antal, president of the Mahoning County St. Vincent De Paul Society in Youngstown, told The Huffington Post. You can rest assured there has been a substantial backlash.
Ryan and his family were photographed cleaning dishes on the premises. During Ryans appearance at the soup kitchen on October 13, he briefly talked with volunteers before donning an apron and cleaning some large metal pots. He was at the soup kitchen for about 15 minutes.
But Antal told the Washington Post that the Romney campaign did not ask for permission before entering the soup kitchen. He said he worried his faith-based apolitical organization could lose funding if it appeared the charity favored one of the political candidates.
The photo-op ended up being an embarrassment for Ryan.

(53,072 posts)They love to talk about how they give so much more to charity than we do. Or why doesn't Ryan himself donate?

(239 posts)Sadly, Ryans behavior is fairly common. I volunteer in my churchs kitchen and we get a kick out of all the people who volunteer, scrub a pot or two then leave. I wish they would just drop a few buck in the collection plate and let me get back to washing my dishes. Lol

(19,458 posts)People are getting it confused. The donors are pissed that the President of the charity came out against Ryan and his bullying photo op. Did you all notice that the Pres. of the charity suddenly backtracked on his comments??? No doubt got angry threats from republicans over calling Ryan to task.

(603 posts)the ones that are pulling their donations then? Their poor little Paul's feewings were hurt, so they are the ones taking it out on the poor. It's amazing that they would blame it on Dems, when it's so obvious who the demons are.

(1,008 posts)The donate page of the national SVDP website didn't have a field to designate a specific location. I want to thank this place directly.
This is getting real political - the manager of the kitchen has been 'identified' as a Democratic primary voter.

(16,987 posts)I was poking around for the exact name of the soup kitchen in Youngstown and the online directories were a little inconclusive.
When E.J. Dionne discussed this story on MSNBC, the first thing he said was what good work the St. Vincent de Paul Society does.

(603 posts)I was 61, still not eligible for SS, and out of work, and my unemployment had run out. I needed help with my rent and they helped me pay my rent that month. I found a temp job shortly after that and was able to continue keeping up on my bills and rent, so they really got me out of a bad situation so I could stay on my feet.

Now picture a racist conservative writing a big check to feed poor urban people in Youngstown.
Next add all the Ayn Rand groupies who worry about the hungry to the sum.

(6,067 posts)Most of the cash donations (as opposed to food) come from corporations and wealthy, white, older people (ie, Republican voters). I suspect what's hurting the donations is the fact that the guy called Ryan out for washing clean pots, rather than the fact that Ryan was there at all. I also suspect that's why the guy flipped so quickly and retracted his statement. As soon as I read the story a few days ago, I thought the soup kitchen must have some bullet proof form of funding, like from the Catholic Church, which is why the guy felt free to speak out. As soon as he retracted his statement, I knew that wasn't the case.

(31 posts)Republicant "politicians" quit working as politicians 35+ years ago. They are now merely marketeers, usually using tactics of smear or fear. Democratic politicians seem to have awaken to this fact...finally!! And now, when the Dems fight fire with fire, you hear all the Republicants whining and complaining. They are sneaky, sleazy marketeers though, repeating something over and over to make the sale to dimwitted "consumers".

(3,182 posts)to this organization and I will add mine.
Last year at Christmas, I couldn't afford the electric bill AND Christmas for my daughter. This organization paid my electric bill (which is also my heat), and the process was not at all intrusive, nor did I have to listen to a "sermon" of any kind. They didn't ask my religion, nor did they impose theirs.
They made sure I had information about how to get additional help within my community and wished me happy holidays.

I'm not saying the response would have been different. I'm just wondering what their policies are.
