Obama To Romney: Yes, We Have Fewer Ships Than 1916 – But Also Fewer Horses And Bayonets

Last edited Mon Oct 22, 2012, 11:53 PM - Edit history (2)

Source: Talking Points Memo

President Obama told Mitt Romney that he was out of touch on his criticism of the current military structure, at the foreign policy debate.

"But I think Gov. Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works," said Obama. "You mention the Navy, and how we have fewer ships than 1916. We also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military has changed. We have aircraft carriers; we have ships that go underwater; nuclear submarines."

"And so the question is not a game of 'Battleship' where we're counting ships. It's: What are our capabilities? So when I sit down with the Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we determine how are we going to be best able to meet all of our defense needs in a way that also keeps faith with our troops, that makes sure our veterans have the kind of support that they need when they come home.

"And that is not reflected in the kind of budget that you're putting forward because it just doesn't work. We visited the website quite a bit and it still doesn't work."

He has no clue that the military adapts over time in relationship to changes in technology. One modern day nuclear powered aircraft carrier probably has more firepower then the entire 1916 US Navy.

It was so obvious Obama had the upper hand on foreign policy. Romney was just spouting talking points.

I loved when President Obama made the comment about the horses and the bayonets.
I'm sure Romney did not know what a bayonet is. lol
What an idiot and then all the Repugs say OH Romney won the debate he looked more
Presidential then President Obama.
They must all have to go to Republican School before they run for office so they can learn
to lie and talk louder then the other guy as well as over talk them. They all do it so I assuming
this is what happens.

It is ludicrous to compare a modern navy to our 1916 navy and it gave Obama an opening for a zinger which appeared to be unrehearsed. How could he know Mitt would give him an opening like that?

I think in an earlier debate even. The President was well prepared to take him down this time. I think before he really was not ready for the level of stupidity and childishness.

Although I love that line, I really liked him comparing it to a board game that we all grew up with. That was the real take down.

RMoney has NO ABILITY to deal with the stuff this country faces on a minute by minute basis. And our President just showed him why that is in language the average person can understand. Yikes, that was harsh though.

When informing Romney that the Navy has ships that can go underwater, he did not add that you can't open the windows on those ships. But I suspect he was thinking it.
