Mitt Romneys testimony in Staples founders divorce case to be considered for public release in open court
CANTON Mitt Romneys 1991 testimony in the divorce of Staples founder Tom Stemberg will be considered for public release on Thursday in open court and with television cameras rolling at Norfolk Probate and Family Court.
The court on Wednesday rejected Stembergs request to close the hearing, siding with the Globe, which is seeking access to the impounded testimony of Romney, now the Republican nominee for president.
Stembergs ex-wife, Maureen Sullivan Stemberg, appeared in court on Wednesday and supported the release of Romneys testimony. Robert G. Jones, an attorney for Romney, said the candidate has no position on whether his testimony should be unsealed.
Gloria Allred, an attorney for Sullivan Stemberg, produced two, inch-thick volumes of testimony Romney delivered during the divorce proceedings two decades ago.
Attorneys for Stemberg, Staples and Romney, who had not reviewed the testimony before Wednesdays hearing, were granted a continuance to do so. The court will reconvene at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

Romney claimed to be a good friend of the founder of Staples who was in the process of divorce.
On edit...This goes to Romney's lying, cronyism and sense of justice, and it seems treatment of women.

(373 posts)Maybe we will be pleasantly surprised but Maureen Sullivan seems like a bitter ex wife that made a bad financial decision. No dead girl or live boy here.

(26,060 posts)is going on here. The court used Romney's testimony to decide on a financial settlement. If he grossly understated the value of the company to help his buddy screw his wife financially (and there is a lot of evidence he did), he could be charged with perjury. At the very least, he looks like the sleazebag we all know he is.

Dear gawd, how and why would have have testified that much? This does seem very strange. I don't even think the transcripts from all three debates would fill 2 inches of paper, he had his nose WAY up in this friend's divorce, looking forward to see what exact details all the fuss is about.

(5,287 posts)it is a big deal. He should be made to face up to his lies just like any of us would have to do if caught out in a similar situation.
If he lied he broke the law while in court...could he face some charges then is my question?

(2,800 posts)Estimating value of a company like Staples is not an exact science.
OTOH, Mitt made most of his money siphoning money out of companies taken over by Bain. He was and is an expert in this field.
I don't know how you could prove perjury, but this can't help him if he looks like he's stealing. If what I've read is correct, he made money out of Staples after this.
