Support for end to California death penalty surges
Source: Los Angeles Times
Nearly half of registered voters still back capital punishment, but the margin has shrunk to 3 percentage points. Voters also favor easing the three-strikes law.
Voter support for a ballot measure to repeal California's death penalty has jumped dramatically, though not enough to ensure its passage, a new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll has found.
Support for a separate measure that would ease the state's three-strikes sentencing law remained high, with more than 60% in favor of amending it.
The survey, conducted last week, showed that the gap between supporters and opponents of Proposition 34, the capital punishment measure, is now very small only 3 percentage points compared with last month. Still, less than half of respondents said they would vote for the measure, which would replace the death penalty with life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.

(15,438 posts)and we are asking our group members to vote for Prop 34 to repeal the DP. You'd be surprised how many people have been made confused by the huge list of Propositions this election year! I had to do the research and pass the information forward. The majority of our group didn't even know that Prop 34 would repeal the expensive and unfair Prop 34!
I get a strong feeling that Prop 34 will pass and California will get rid of the stupid and barbaric DP, hopefully once and for all.

(12,769 posts)It ticks me off having to study so many of them to determine exactly what they are really saying. (Of course, simply looking at who is supporting them is often a big clue.) I'd much prefer legislatures actually do their job and allow them to do it.
I do the same as you and pass my recs on to those that aren't willing to go through the process. The Women's League of Voters is often a good source of recommendations, as are unions.
It would be great if 34 passed and I am so happy to hear that 36 has so much support. On the downside 30 is rapidly losing support.

(27,454 posts)The DP is barbaric and expensive. It's one way CA can save some much needed money, too.
I remember when the initiative to reinstate the DP was on the ballot. I voted against it then. The argument that it is a deterent is absurd.
