Survey: N.J. Dems might have enough votes in state Senate to approve gay marriage
TRENTON As state lawmakers gathered Tuesday to usher in a new session with their high hopes and soaring phrases, an informal survey showed that a majority of senators support the idea of same-sex marriage, though some said they wanted to review the details of newly proposed legislation.
While the marriage measure has been presented by Democratic leaders as a legislative priority, attention is also riveted on economic issues like raising the minimum wage and enacting a millionaires tax, and now a proposal by Gov. Chris Christie to reduce the state income tax by 10 percent.

The survey of lawmakers lining up behind the same-sex measure review showed the measure poised for passage in the Senate, where it failed two years ago.
"It is a disgrace a disgrace that we deny civil rights to our residents," Senate Majority Leader Loretta Weinberg (D-Bergen), a sponsor, said in a speech marking the reorganization of the Senate Tuesday. "However long I am in this position, however long the feisty is still within me, the fight for marriage equality will be front and center."

Loretta is the Godmother of LGBT equality here in New Jersey. She has been indefatigable in her marriage equality efforts. You can thank her for getting the Senate President on board and as the newly appointed Majority Leader she will whip the caucus into lining up for this bill.
The article from earlier today also details Republican support for marriage equality.

(32,029 posts)fun fact: Andrew Schlafly, son of conservative icon Phyllis Schlafly and founder of Conservapedia, lives in northern NJ. He'll lose a few hairs when NJ passes gay marriage. Meanwhile, I hope the gay NJ'ers who went to NY for their weddings enjoyed seeing NYC and didn't have to endure traffic jams along the George Washington Bridge (BTW, the bridge from where gay college student Tyler Clementi jumped to suicide).

(12,359 posts)The only opposition I ever see at any of our hearings, debates, court cases, press conferences, etc...are these two guys:
[IMG][/IMG]
Greg Quinlan, the gentleman wearing glasses, is an "ex-gay" activist. After he left the "homosexual lifestyle", the woman that he married divorced him in 2007. Come to your own conclusions as to why.
John Tomicki is the older gentleman with his hand on his chin. He's the president of the New Jersey Coalition to Preserve and Protect Marriage. A total schlub. Always wears clothes that have stains and/or holes.
We have a long-standing policy not engage the opposition, since they crave the attention.
