Robo call questions voter registration in Detroit
Published On: Nov 02 2012 11:35:27 PM EDT

DETROIT - Call it suspicious, shady or last minute campaign shenanigans. A Detroit woman received a voicemail on her cellphone which started like this: “Hello, I ‘m calling from Campaign Industries.

"Our firm worked over the last months to increase voter registration in the Detroit area. Due to an unintentional error by one of our employees a small number of voter registration applications including yours were filed after the deadline for the November election.”

It then goes on to say while you won’t have any issues in future elections you may have a problem on Tuesday. It then asks you to check with the Secretary of State to make sure you’re registered.

Kimberley Thomas got the call and was confused. “It will probably confuse other people just like it confused me and I know I’m registered to vote,” Thomas said.

Sounds like voter suppression to me!

This one's only a step behind the announcement that Election Day has been moved to Wednesday, November 7, 2012.

1. Okay, people HAVE TO USE THEIR BRAIN POWER right now....

All one has to do in Michigan to verify if you're registered to vote is go to this link....

https://webapps.sos.state.mi.us/mivote/

Nearly all local libraries allow residents (and some non-residents) to use a computer for FREE with a form of ID (A State Drivers License is NOT the only form of ID they will accept).

Also information has been BLASTED in this state on how a voter can check if they're registered to vote and where, before partaking themselves to the polls. Last resort, call your local county, city, village, township clerk's office and they are REQUIRED to give a voter the EXACT SAME information, if they don't know how to use a computer.

So, if a Michigander is fooled by a Robocall instead of doing THEIR due-diligence, they must not have wanted to vote....IMHO.

2. Many of Detroit's public libraries have been shut down.

Many Detroit residents have no cars. They rely on the decimated bus system to get around. On weekends, there is an abbreviated bus schedule which makes going anywhere damn near impossible.

And then, this story breaks on a Friday night before election Tuesday.

I can tell you from experiences spanning decades in both cities that Ann Arbor is a world apart from today's Detroit.

If this kinda shit isn't voter suppression, I don't know what it would take to qualify.

3. And I assume they have no phones....

No offense but I know Ann Arbor is about 40 miles from Detroit but, to deny that resources haven't been focused in the city of Detroit especially to let voters know the ways they can check if they're registered to vote would be not correct.

A majority of residents in Detroit might be depressed (especially with the state of affairs under Dave Bing's Leadership) but they're very smart. If so and so called them days before election day and they VOTED with no problem during August 7th primary, you bet it would ring a warning bell of possible "voter suppression". But those actions stopping that citizen from partaking to the polls on November 6th to vote and instead just "stay home"....I doubt it.

Again, if a computer is not available, call Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey office at (313) 224-3260 or TTY: 711 or (800) 649-3777. Doing this is going to do much more with ensuring people partake in their right to vote than believing falsehoods by some "group" calling you on a phone four days before an election to say "you are not registered to vote".

5. Not every potential Tuesday voter in Detroit is sufficiently motivated to go through those hoops.

Those are the folks at whom these calls are directed.

Never mind that the GOP and its Citizens United friends have just made a multi-million dollar ad buy on TV/radio. They're trying to put Michigan back in play.

Voter suppression is voter suppression regardless of the number who can and do navigate the intimidating landscape.

6. And outsmarting folks who would engage in voter suppression

Will ENSURE that one will vote on Election Day! Complaining in one thing and being PROACTIVE instead of REACTIVE is another. If you don't vote because someone, somewhere in America or Michigan stop one from going to the polls over a fake call, there's no law in America that will allow you to vote after the fact. Those are the facts, period.

Again, PROACTIVE means voting absentee -which one can pick up a absentee ballot up to TOMORROW at their city, township, village or county clerk's office- fill it out there and turn it in-. calling the city, township, village or county clerk's office to ensure one is registered to vote before election day and/or using a computer or borrowing one to check the Michigan Votes website to double check their voters registration.

Anything other than GOING TO THE POLLS ON ELECTION DAY and being denied or TRYING TO VOTE ABSENTEE and not being allowed to denied a ballot if you're registered is one not partaking in ones civic duty of due-diligence, plain and simple. If any of the above incidents of being denied a RIGHT to VOTE occurs, the voter should IMMEDIATELY CALL 866-OUR-VOTE via the Election Protection Hotline.
,
Otherwise, stories are this aren't doing anything to let voters KNOW THEIR RESOURCES to ensure they can vote and what to do if they're denied the right to vote at the polls!

7. Go to the City Clerk's office in Detroit for an absentee ballot ON A SATURDAY? ... Surely you jest!

Worlds apart.

Have you ever lived in the city of Detroit? ... Recently?

10. Again, maybe you should read Michigan Election Law....
Sat Nov 3, 2012, 02:04 AM
Nov 2012

Then get back to me....

But here it is....

"Your request for an absentee voter ballot must be in writing and can be submitted to your city or township clerk. (For assistance in obtaining the address of your city or township clerk, see http://www.Michigan.gov/vote) Your request must include one of the six statutory reasons stated above and your signature. You must request an absentee voter ballot by mailing the application, a letter, a postcard, or a pre-printed application form obtained from your local clerk's office. Requests to have an absentee voter ballot mailed to you must be received by your clerk no later than 2 p.m. the Saturday before the election."

http://www.michigan.gov/sos/0,4670,7-127-1633_8716_8728-21037--,00.html

Umm....that would be Saturday, November 3, 2012 by the way. If the Clerk's Office is closed, pick up the phone and leave a message requesting an absentee ballot, go to the office on Monday and pick it up. They have until 2PM EDT Saturday to do so. Then either show up in person for a ballot on Saturday if the Clerk's office is open or request by phone to pick a ballot up on Monday.

Or they could take your methodology and just complain....and miss out on a opportunity to take part in their civic duty to vote.

And to answer your question, I've lived (Dexter & Davidson, New Center Area on Steward Street), worked (On Livernois near Seven Mile around the corner from Palmer Park & in Highland Park off of Woodward), taught school (King, Durfee, Central and Charter Schools) and know all sides East, West, North and South like the back of my hand. Thanks!

11. OMG!! This about about VOTING, not having a ID to vote....
Sat Nov 3, 2012, 02:12 AM
Nov 2012

Stop confusing the issue. This is what the right wing does quite often and its sad to see some on the left engaged in this tactic. Where in this thread have not given one or many more methods to ensure potential voters can:

1. Make sure they are registered to vote on election day.

2. Ensure they can receive an absentee ballot by requesting one by not later than 2PM EDT on Saturday, November 3rd.

3. Provided the number to Election Protection at 866-OUR-VOTE if they're DENIED a right to vote at the polls or receiving an absentee ballot.

And I have YET to see a reply with any of this important information on PROTECTING ONE'S RIGHT TO VOTE in MICHIGAN by the repliers of this thread.

So, who's trying to take away what again? Complaining without providing solutions is frankly, doing nothing to ensure voters can vote Tuesday, November 6th!

Just saying.

like there's no problem except for the stupid and the lazy. Very rightie of you.

"So, if a Michigander is fooled by a Robocall instead of doing THEIR due-diligence, they must not have wanted to vote....IMHO."

If they are "PROACTIVE" to use another of your words with your all-caps and bold-facing.

Its just like what the righties say about other forms of voter suppression like voter ID -- its not voter suppression really, its just putting some extra obstacles in the ways that anyone "PROACTIVE" enough will get around, so there's not a problem. Right? right I guess.

13. Look you can take your lost argument and....

Go somewhere else with it. I live in Michigan, know the laws and assist voters with not only access but being PROACTIVE on how to vote (yes, its' again in bold/capital letters). Well, I'm sure you know the saying that if you have nothing to add (feel free to finish this sentence) as I don't want to seem pompous and all.

Also, again were on this thread is your facts how Michiganders can ensure they've access to the polls either on election day or by our absentee voting process. Oh...yeah....you didn't have any.

Also, very RIGHTIE (umm...is that a word -- but its' your word incorrectly spelled, not mines) of you to not make sure voters have all the accurate information to secure ACCESS to the polls on or before election day.

4. These right wing creeps know NO bounds of decency sinking to criminal levels with these SCAM CALLS.

I wonder if Republicans ever get calls from sneaky Democrats' groups pretending to be poll watchers and saying "Hi your voter registration is in question"? No? i wish the USDOJ had some balls and in addition to calling this action what it is...voter suppression...actually sent the perps to federal prison. At least I know that states are prosecuting the groups that tear apart Democrats' voter registration forms?

9. Sadly, this is a reality and its' getting worst....
Sat Nov 3, 2012, 01:57 AM
Nov 2012

Which is why folks have to stay on top of this and be PROACTIVE instead of REACTIVE. Yes, it would have been great during the prior four years, the Department of Justice would have got Congress to pass new laws regulating these behaviors and tactics as illegal. Reality says that the Republican House would have blocked any legislation targeted of the sort.

SO....voters have to be SMARTER. Look, did Gore v. Bush get fixed in Florida or Kerry getting robbed in winning Ohio in 2004 despite complaints and so-called "investigations?" NO! This is the reality, sadly. SO AGAIN, voters must be PROACTIVE and stop immediately listening to any effort designed to stop them from voting on election day and VOTE.

If the early voting lines are going to be long in Florida because Rick Scott want to play games, absentee vote. If Ohio's Secretary of State going to tinker with election night results because the vote is close....vow to vote early and in LARGER NUMBERS. This is what the message has been from President Obama's Campaign since February 2012 because they knew GOP would play games like this. Voters needed to take heed months ago to these warnings.
