Poll: Obama up 6 in Ohio, 2 in Fla.

The Wall Street Journal, NBC News and Marist College produce the umpteenth poll of the week showing Barack Obama with a steady edge in Ohio and a very close race in Florida:
The surveys found the two battling neck-and-neck in Florida, with Mr. Obama drawing 49% support among likely voters to Mr. Romney's 47%.
Mr. Obama held a firmer lead in Ohio51% to 45%, unchanged from mid-Octoberwhere the relatively more buoyant economy and the federal bailout of the auto industry appear to have solidified his support among a wide swath of voters.
In both states, Mr. Obama got high marks from all sides for his management of recovery efforts after the storm Sandy hit the East Coast. That tracks an array of polls taken in the past week suggesting that Mr. Romney's rise may have flattened out just before Sandy landed, an event that sucked national attention away from the campaign trail. In the Florida and Ohio polls, even a majority of Republican voters approved of Mr. Obama's handling of the storm's aftermath.

If this had worked, it would be the most cynical joke of all.

(804 posts)Any theories or facts on this? Ohio as well, I'd always thought it was a strong middle class state.

(4,667 posts)Culturally being there is like being in Alabama, South Carolina or Mississippi.
White southerners are the worst demographic group in the country for Democrats. This is a continued backlash against the Dems because they supported equal rights for all people regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation and class. Dems also support math and science. This goes against traditional white southern culture. And the Democrats have been paying for this in the deep south ever since.

(2,292 posts)I am a middle-aged, white Southern male. I have lived in the South for most of my life -- Kentucky, Mississippi, Tennessee, and now Alabama. I spent a couple of years in New England, but it wasn't home, was cold, very cold, and I left.
Granted, the Republican Right has a stranglehold on the South. There are, however, many progressive people down here, believe it or not. And, thank you very much, we have a rich cultural heritage in the arts, literature and music.
Alabama is a wonderful state and a great place to live. Just curious, have you ever spent any time here?

(804 posts)I was curious why Florida was always a difficult state for the Dems to win, and a couple people mentioned the pan handle.
I have so much respect for people like you who can live in a community in which the majority are the opposite of your views. That's awesome!
I was in New Orleans years before it was destroyed and also through many other areas of the south (touring with a band) and I had a great time meeting wonderful people, hearing brilliant music, seeing old history and enjoyed eating and drinking.
It is wonderful. Sorry if this came off harsh on you. ~Lex

(4,667 posts)I must remember, Bill Clinton was from the south. So was Al Gore. These are two people a strongly supported for President.
I apologize.
I once lived in South Carolina. It was absolutely beautiful. I loved it there. Everyone was very nice. I just don't understand what happens anytime the topic turned to politics and social issues.
Good post. My OP should have been written differently.
