Nine Cleveland-area voting locations without power in Sandy's wake
Superstorm Sandy has left a trail of wreckage in her wake, devastating mid-Atlantic coastal communities. But her political impact may be felt as far inland as Ohio, where more than nine polling precincts in and around Cleveland still do not have power four days after the storm passed.
The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that "Cleveland, Lakewood, Brecksville, Berea and Hunting Valley each have one polling place in the dark. Bay Village has four spots without power." In addition, more than a dozen other polling locations could not be reached by phone.
Election officials have voiced confidence that Tuesday's election will not be affected by the power outages, pointing to reports from local utility companies that power should be restored to affected areas by the end of Monday.
But their contingency plans do not exactly inspire confidence: "If we encounter outages, we have portable generators we could deploy to a limited number of locations and also have flashlight supplies on hand to help deal with that situation," said Jane Platten, Cuyahoga County Board of Elections director.

(32,052 posts)From sports teams that constantly come up short to losing electricity during an election. Ouch.
I did a google search and don't see any news of outages in more right wing places like Dayton or Cincinnati. In Toledo, the power outages were fewer. And polling places in Detroit will still have power.

(1,201 posts)Are these suburban Republican areas or will they be urban African American wards that will somehow never get power back on until after the election?

For gods sake, it shouldn't take electricity to vote. It was run many years without.

Cleveland, OH (November 1, 2012) -- Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) today released the following statement concerning FirstEnergys failure to return power to the people of Northeast Ohio. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that 127,000 area residents are still without power after FirstEnergy sent 200 linemen and nearly half its support staff to assist sister companies on the East Coast. Cleveland Public Power, by comparison, has only 1000 households remaining without power.
FirstEnergys failure is frustrating on multiple levels and it raises serious questions about management of this Fortune 500 corporation. One hundred twenty seven thousand residents waiting in the cold is clear proof that FirstEnergy is unable to respond to a system wide emergency. With every merger and every expansion, FirstEnergy cuts staff to increase profits. They have cut so deeply, they are unable to respond to an emergency, leaving consumers to pay the price. We should not forget that this is the same company that caused a major blackout along the entire east coast because it was too cheap to maintain its tree trimming responsibilities.
Secondly, FirstEnergys problem was foreseeable. Many of the residents who have called my office have raised questions about motivations. We had plenty of warning that a major storm was coming. FirstEnergy had time to send nearly 50 percent of its support staff to the East Coast. Why then did FirstEnergy not secure support staff from unaffected states before the emergency began? Media reports indicate FirstEnergy has requested support, but only after residents have been without power for days.
FirstEnergy has a long and continued track record of incompetence. The company has a culture of cutting corners in order to increase profits. This is a company that owns nuclear power plants with abysmal safety records. We put our lives in the hands of a company that puts profits before safety.
While I hope that all residents will soon have power, it is well established that global climate change will make severe weather more common. FirstEnergy needs to be held accountable. The people of Northern Ohio deserve better, said Kucinich.

call your state DEM party & volunteer your generator & time to power a polling place.
I called mine in PA & may be traveling to Lehigh Vally area and bring my generator with me.
If it happens it will be a long long boring day but I will bring food, sleeping bag, pillows, brownies & other snacks & napping equipment but it is critical we win the popular vote to prevent a 2000 Bush v Gore fiasco!!!!
