NJ Orders Paper Ballots for Powerless E-Voting Sites; Also Allows Email, Fax Voting; STATE UPDATES

NJ Orders Paper Ballots for Powerless E-Voting Sites, (Insanely) Allows for Voting by Email, Fax
ALSO: NY, CT, PA, VA and OH polling sites struggle to get back on line after Superstorm Sandy and in time for Election Day...

Since both before Superstorm Sandy hit, and after, we've been reporting on concerns in states where voters are forced to vote on electronic voting systems on Election Day and, thus, could be kept from being able to cast a vote at all in this Tuesday's Presidential Election should power be unavailable at polling sites.

We've noted that voters simply cannot cast a vote at all on such systems when the power is out, and that it's just one more reason why no American should ever be forced to vote on the 100% unverifiable voting systems, incredibly, still in use across most of states such as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and parts of Ohio which were all hit hard by the storm, along with New York, Connecticut and elsewhere.

We've got a bit of good news to report today, for some of the voters whose ability to vote at all has been imperiled by this inexcusable, completely foreseeable failure by public officials who have long ago been warned about this possibility and yet refused to do the sensible thing and move to a verifiable paper ballot system to avoid it.

The news is more encouraging in states like NY and CT, where officials respect voters enough to allow them all to vote on paper ballots, even when natural disasters haven't struck...

From the link:

Security experts have warned that electronic voting systems are decades away from being secure, and to prove it a team from the University of Michigan successfully got the foul-mouthed, drunken Futurama robot Bender elected to head of a school board. ...In 2010 the Washington DC election board announced it had set up an e-voting system for absentee ballots and was planning to use it in an election. However, to test the system, it invited the security community and members of the public to try and hack it three weeks before the election....

...Once in, the team searched the government servers for additional vulnerabilities and system options. They found that the cameras installed to watch the voting systems weren't protected, and used them to work out when staff left for the day and so wouldn't spot server activity. More worrying, they also found a PDF file containing the authentication codes for every Washington DC voter in the forthcoming election.

The team altered all the ballots on the system to vote for none of the nominated candidates. They then wrote in names of fictional IT systems as candidates, including Skynet and (Halderman's personal favorite) Bender for head of the DC school board. They also set up systems so that any further ballots would come under their control.

According to the log files the team found, plenty of people were also busy trying to get into the system. They spotted attempts to get in from the Persian University, as well as India and China. Using their inside access, they blocked these attacks.

What the heck are "authentication codes" for voters? Would having that information allow someone to go in and selectively invalidate the ballot choices of voters they'd want to disenfranchise?

6. You DO know there are other races on the ballot beyond President, right?

Very frustrating that folks think the Presidential race is the only one that matters. Not unique to you, or to NJ and NY. Just frustrating.

Democracy for all, please.

challenging eric cantor, and working very hard to get cantor OUT of the House,
and supported and voted for John Delaney in MD #6, hoping to oust roscoe bartlett.

Folks here do NOT think the Presidential race is the only one that matters, many here have spent time, effort and $$$ on challengers to Brown in Mass, Ryan in Wisc, and supporting Dems all around the country.

There were several hundred on line and all of these folks voted on the same paper ballot. S at least at the polling site, the county clerks offices, they're all voting on paper. These can be manually recounted such a need is warranted. It won't, NJ will be Obama's by double digits.

N.J. news media rebuffed in bid to lift exit-polling limits

ASSOCIATED PRESS
WIRE REPORT

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

TRENTON, N.J. — A federal judge in New Jersey has denied an attempt by more than 100 daily and weekly newspapers to get access to voters as they leave polling places.

The suit was filed by the New Jersey Press Association and challenged a state directive that prohibits journalists from coming within 100 feet of a polling place.

The plaintiffs had argued that the restriction infringed on the newspapers’ First Amendment rights and hampered their ability to report on the election.

U.S. District Judge Joel Pisano sided with lawyers for the state who contended the case was about “keeping polling places and the citizens who vote there undisturbed” and that allowing the media closer access would create “chaos and commotion.”

The Star-Ledger of Newark reported that “in 2007, the state Attorney General’s Office issued a directive, which was later upheld by the state Supreme Court, banning the media from conducting interviews or exit polling within 100 feet of a polling place.”

In 2009, U.S. District Judge Peter Sheridan suspended the state high court’s ruling for that November’s election, allowing reporters to approach voters within the 100-foot limit to conduct exit polling.

The GOP thinks it has this election in the bag for Rob-me. Not. Even if you are not a Catholic, pray to Saint Isadore. He is the patron saint of computers and computer programmers and their families, in so many words. Whatever we can do to ensure a fair election, we should do. Get praying. He can protect us from the Clint Curtis' of this world in such an important election. It has been proven prayer works, especially when huge numbers pray. Vote Obama into office. Then let's get rid of these GOP operated, fallible, inefficient, insecure, obsolete, electronic voting machines for good. Vote for sure... pray if you dare. It certainly can't hurt.

Dear Patron Saint Isadore, please protect our election from unethical computer geeks who think they can steal this election. This may be the most important election to affect the lives of the majority of Americans, our country, our world and our planet. Please protect us and guide our poll workers, poll watchers, lawyers, judges, Anonymous, and everyone who has a hand in counting our votes. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.
