President Of Florida-Based Company Threatens To Fire Employees If Romney Loses
By Annie-Rose Strasser on Nov 4, 2012 at 2:35 pm

With fewer than 72 hours before polls begin to close, another report has emerged of a company owner strongly urging his employees to vote for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama, claiming that their jobs are potentially on the line if Obama wins re-election.

Cliff Otto, president of the Florida-based Saddle Creek Corporation, circulated an email to staff this week explaining that, while “we do not support candidates based on their political affiliation,” Romney’s positions are in “the best interest of our company, and therefore our jobs and our future”:

In the past, Saddle Creek has not felt it imperative that we communicate with our associates regarding the political issues that affect our business. This year the positions taken by the two presidential candidates with regard to these issues are starkly different. As such [we] feel it would be wrong for us not to share with you the company’s position on just a few of the critical issues and, at the same time, how each of the two candidates compare to our position. … We do not support candidates based on their political affiliation. We do support candidates that share our positions with regard to the key issues facing our company and our country. Thank you for considering what Saddle Creek believes is in the best interest of our company, and therefore our jobs and our future.

An accompanying flyer, obtained by MSNBC’s Up With Chris Hayes, highlights by position — not candidate — which would be more beneficial for Otto’s employees’ jobs:

in a lawsuit against these fascist pricks.

But that will have to wait until after we reverse Citizens United,
since -- as I understand it -- this crap was "legalized" in that
ruling, as well as all the unlimited money crap.

I applaud your sentiment but I'm not quite sure how I could boycott someone in the warehousing, transportation, packaging, and fulfillment business. I occasionally rent a U-Haul, pack boxes, and have a need to rent a storage unit for awhile, but that's about it.

But I do applaud your sentiment...

Own their votes? These bosses likely are not popular with their employees and would be losing them in a good economy.

My theory is these are people who are losing money in their businesses, and want to find a way to blame something other than their incompetence when the business shuts down, and the timing is right.

Not only because of this threat, but these employees have no control over who wins the election. they can only cast one vote, and that isn't going to swing the tally and save their jobs. This business owner is stupid enough there probably isn't much of a future with the company anyway.

What next? Will he threaten to clean house if the Rays have a bad season? What if it rains on his vacation, is that a reason to lay off his employees?

Find a new job with a mentally stable employer.

I was so upset with this strongarm tactic to elect his choice of candidateI had to tell him what I thought:

After reading the internal memo you posted to your employees in which you used their jobs as (not so) subtle coercion to elect the presidential candidate of your choice, I felt compelled to write and express my sincere wish that your company go straight down the toilet ASAP. You don't deserve to thrive and profit in a true democracy.

You are the very reason people organize unions. I only hope the best workers at your business leave your employ as soon as the first opportunity presents itself.

The business operates a bunch of warehouses that stock and ship goods for other businesses.
Think Amazon ( which has its own warehouses).
They hire only hourly part time employees, do not pay any benefits, including workman's comp, and can replace people from a growing pool of desperate unemployed people.
So the threat of losing your job may carry some weight to low information workers.

What I am really curious about is if there is any way the employer can tell how his employees voted.
If so, THAT would be a marvelous class action lawsuit.

Your top employees are problem solvers who take initiative ... and he just presented them with a problem to solve.

They've already figured out that no matter how they vote, if Obama wins, they could lose their job. So those initiative takers will take the initiative, and start looking.
