Americans for Responsible Leadership Admits Campaign Money Laundering, Discloses $11 Million Donor
Source: California Fair Political Practices Commission
Sacramento - Americans for Responsible Leadership, the Arizona non-profit corporation that made an anonymous $11 million donation to a California campaign committee, today sent a letter declaring itself to be the intermediary and not the true source of the contribution. It identified the true source of the contribution as Americans for Job Security, through a second intermediary, The Center to Protect Patient Rights. Under California law, the failure to disclose this initially was campaign money laundering. At $11 million, this is the largest contribution ever disclosed as campaign money laundering in California history.
"The persistence and hard work of the FPPC has won a significant and lasting victory for transparency in the political process," said Ann Ravel, Chair of the FPPC. "We will continue in this matter and all others to ensure that the people of California know who is funding political activity in this State."
California's Political Reform Act requires disclosure to the people of California of the true source of campaign donations. This information is required in most cases before the election, when it matters. The Act requires those who serve as intermediaries, or middlemen, for contributions to disclose their true source to the recipient of the contribution.
"This case also demonstrates the need for reform to make sure true donors are disclosed and can't hide behind innocuous committee names," said Ravel. "The people of California deserve better."

A group tied to David and Charles Koch, the billionaire brothers who have played an outsize role in spreading anonymous political cash around the country, was behind the shadowy Arizona group's $11 million donation to a California business group.
... Ravel named the Center to Protect Patient Rights, an offshoot of the Koch brothers' Americans For Prosperity, as the group that made the donation.
... The Arizona group is a 501(c)4 nonprofit advocacy organization, which under IRS rules does not have to reveal donors' names. These groups have become prominent in this election cycle as hundreds of millions of dollars in political cash was unleashed by the U.S. Supreme Court's 2010 Citizens United decision to allow unlimited corporate spending in campaigns.

Americans for Job Security, a Republican-leaning business group, is behind the $8 million ad buy on air in swing states including Ohio. The group does not disclose its donors. Its president, Stephen DeMaura, is a former executive director of the New Hampshire Republican Party.

The Crossroads groups share something else with Americans for Job Security a media buyer.
Americans for Job Security paid $8,165,368 to Crossroads Media LLC to purchase the airtime from television stations, Federal Election Commission records show. And the business group paid McCarthy Hennings Media Inc. $63,171 to produce its ads. Another McCarthy client? Restore Our Future, a super-PAC run by former Romney aides.

No one tried to hold anyone accountable.
No one even talked favorably about the idea.

(229 posts)you have to hit their pocketbook. That is the only thing that would affect this activity. I think all money found to be sent through these groups (laundered), needs to be confiscated (or enormous fines) and used to combat citizens united and the whole "purchasing of candidates" political landscape. This country is being taken hostage by these special interest groups. Until their pocket books are hit, nothing will change. It will eventually be the people who stand up and say NO MORE.

(431 posts)Except on a television show. The self-proclaimed, "ruling elite" are different. They live by different rules. They do know though that they're mortal just like the rest of us. Remember that scene in "2012" when the Russian mobster saved his kids and "went over the edge" to his death anyway? Superhuman greed doesn't grant you immortality.

Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves. Even when they enter deep into our world or sink below us, they still think that they are better than we are. They are different.
