Teri Shields Dies at 79; Mother and Manager
Source: New York Times
Teri Shields, who began promoting her daughter, Brooke, as a child model and actress when she was an infant and allowed her to be cast as a child prostitute in the 1978 film Pretty Baby, died on Wednesday in Manhattan. She was 79.
Her death followed a long illness related to dementia, a spokesman for Brooke Shields said.
Teri Shields was a single mother when she began managing her 11-month-old daughter, finding her a job in an advertisement for Dove soap. When Brooke was 10, she arranged for a photographer to take nude pictures of her. Then came Pretty Baby, a Calvin Klein jeans campaign when she was 15 and more movies.
Ms. Shields said later that she had been like any parent who tries to do what she thinks is best for her child and that in this case it seemed wise to take advantage of her daughters striking beauty. She also noted Brookes acquiescence.

(507 posts)why "Pretty Baby" wasn't seen as pedophile semi-porn. If Brooke had been a boy no one would call it anything else.
I always thought Mama Shields was loathsome.

(4,150 posts)The worst example of a stereotypical Hollywood mom.
What kind of mother would seek to have nude pics made of her pre-pubescent daughter? She most definitely had a screw loose and was probably greedy, to boot.

(26,080 posts)Look at Roman Polanski. They would throw away the key if he drugged and raped a child now.

(904 posts)Brooke seems to have been a very well adjusted child, a good student, never got into trouble and by all accounts a very nice person. In addition to her acting she attended and graduated from Princeton. She seems to be in a stable marriage and is raising 2 young daughters. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about her.

As child acters go, Brooke Shields seems to have pulled through very well. I have seen her speaking out on mental health and depression, which I greatly appreciate, being in the mental health field. I would like to see more celebreties speaking on this subject from personal experience, as it helps to not only de-stigmatize, but provides hope and motivation for those with these illnesses.

(50,254 posts)My condolences to Brooke and her family, both for her loss today and for the pain her mother's cruel suffering. Dementia is one of the most horrible afflictions a person can have...destroying the mind while sparing the body.

(3,261 posts)It was very funny at the time but now I wonder if Teri was already suffering from dementia then as opposed to just struggling with alcoholism. It seems that she and Brooke worked through whatever issues they had so hopefully Brooke can find solace in that.

(50 posts)Never had that much of an opinion on Brooke and her family troubles.
However I do remember quite vividly the talk about her Mom being an overbearing, fame seeking, witch when I was younger.
Just watched the episode of "Who Do you Think You Are" (The show features celebrities tracking their unknown family history) with Brooke discovering a lot of new things about both her Mom and Dad. It was actually quite touching.
Losing a parent is never fun. Dementia has got to be just a brutal way to go for everyone involved.

(8,747 posts)However, the pair never made it into the bedroom and George was revealed to be a homosexual when he was arrested on 7 April 1998 for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public toilet in a park in Beverly Hills, California.
In an interview with Health magazine, she said: "I think I should have lost my virginity earlier than I did at 22. I had the public and all this pressure, and I wish I had just gotten it over with in the beginning when it was sort of OK. I think I would have been much more in touch with myself. I think I wouldn't have had issues with weight - I carried this protective 20 pounds [in college]. It was all connected. And to me, that's a ... regret."
Sort of surprising. I have heard of many women who said they wish they had waited, but few who wish they had done it sooner. So she wasn't screwed up by being in "Pretty Baby".
