First Lady Michelle Obama made an election eve pitch at an open-air hangar at Charlotte Douglas International Airport today, just hours before voters head to the polls to decide whether her husband will be re-elected.
The last-minute stumping in North Carolina demonstrated a belief by President Barack Obama's camp that it could win the state despite a building sentiment two weeks ago that Republican nominee Mitt Romney would prevail. Polls in North Carolina show the two candidates running dead-even. In 2008, Obama won North Carolina by 14,000 votes over John McCain, with 4.3 million ballots cast in all.
It marked the first time a Democratic presidential nominee had carried the state since Jimmy Carter in 1976. President Obama made the Tar Heel State a priority throughout the current campaign, most obviously by awarding Charlotte the Democratic National Convention, where Obama accepted his re-nomination in September.
The president hasnt been back to the state since, though Vice President Joe Biden came to Charlotte in October. His wife, Jill, stumped in Huntersville last week, while former President Bill Clinton rallied Democrats in Raleigh on Sunday. Romney and his running mate, Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, made the region a primary launching pad in August but have been absent from the state in the closing weeks.
