Obama, Tearful, Finishes Campaign In Iowa, Where It Started

WASHINGTON -- As sentimentality goes, President Barack Obama hosting the last campaign event of his political career in Des Moines, Iowa, is hard to top. The Hawkeye State launched the then-junior senator from Illinois to national prominence. And there is a movie script-like quality to having such a historic political trajectory emerge out of the frosty cornfields.

Speaking just steps from his 2008 caucus headquarters on Monday evening, it seemed at times as if the magic hadn't faded.

"I came back to ask you to help us finish what we started because this is where our movement for change began," Obama declared. "To all of you who’ve lived and breathed the hard work of change: I want to thank you. You took this campaign and made it your own ... starting a movement that spread across the country.

"When the cynics said we couldn't, you said yes we can. You said yes we can and we did. Against all odds, we did," he said.

Wiping the occasional tear from his eye, and looking over a crowd of 20,000, Obama concluded with the same story that he told on the last day of his '08 campaign: about the origins of his signature "fired-up-ready-to-go" chant. The arc of his first term in office was seemingly complete.

Gee ... Wouldn't it be nice if the country DIDN'T have to deal with this bunch of intransigent, belligerent, bellicose Do-Nothing buffoons from the Tea Party ?

The blades are getting sharpened, I think, and being saved for AFTER his re-election. The Tea Party as a National "Movement" isn't going to make it through the Mid-Terms.

...in the Civil War and solved the slavery problem with intense sanctions, a worldwide boycott and enormous, federal help for the underground railroad.

Catering to the Confederacy mentality has harmed the entire world and has eaten up much of our democracy.

Read the Book "Let 'Em Go"---which seems to have a plan for forgetting about them and building instead our progressive agenda without them.

Wow, reading the description of "Better Off Without 'Em" by Chuck Thompson, and Amazon reviews on this book is mind-boggling. The very first reviewer describes growing up in Georgia that is scarily similar to mine in south Florida. In fact, my horror experiences are what motivated me to write my second novel about racism and ageism in the deep south.

Thank you so much, zentrum, for making us aware of this book. At this point, I too, recommend others read Thompson's book.

**zentrum, please correct me if I got the book title wrong.

..."reduced popularity, a poor economy and no novelty." It seems like HuffPo is once again buying into the RW narrative. You would think that a slate of accomplishments and an economy recovering from the brink of a another Great Depression should be more than a bit novel, particularly in the first post-Citizens United election!

I guess we should not be surprised since Arrianna Huffington has openly flirted with the idea of supporting Romney.

of 'Fired up, Ready to Go'. But living in a blue state, we don't get those big rally celebrations. The Obama visits in SoCal were $2,500+/person fundraiser events
