Chrysler gives workers day off to vote
Source: Politico
The car company that attacked Mitt Romney for falsely claiming it was moving operations overseas is going a step further, ostensibly for President Obama.
Chrysler's vice president of design, Ralph Gilles, tweeted Tuesday that the company gave its entire work force the day off to vote. "Let's Go!" he wrote.
UAW has been a stalwart supporter of the president and Obama has campaigned heavily on his decision to bail out the auto industry, particularly in the critical swing state of Ohio, where one in eight jobs depends on the industry.
Last week, Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne pushed back on a Romney ad that asserted the company was moving Jeep manufacturing to China. Gilles also pushed back on the assertion when it was made by Donald Trump last week. Gilles tweeted Trump "you are full of ----!"

In any case, kudos to Chrysler for making it easier for their employees to exercise their civic duty and vote.

(71,611 posts)The Ruling Class would never allow that. The BEST labor is labor without the right to vote. Ex-felons, H1Bs, slaves, you-name-it! Can't have them worker bees mucking up the system!

(16,191 posts)There's no law requiring businesses to close on national holidays, and the fact that you can go shopping on Christmas or buy a Starbucks on the 4th of July is proof enough of that. The only people mandated by law to get the day off are Federal employees. For everyone else, it's a matter of employer charity or a right negotiated between the employees and employers.
I evpect that Voting Day would rank right up there with Columbus Day when it comes to businesses observing it (Coumbus Day is a full national holiday, but I don't know anyone other than federal employees who get it off).

(90 posts)The more people voting, the better, and you know who Chrysler's folks are voting for, because a vote for Romney would be a vote against their interests.
If only more companies did the same for their workers...

(22,871 posts)There were more UAW baseball caps and jackets than I've ever seen on election day. We also have a state wide ballot to protect the right to organize in our constitution, they'll be a voting force to be reckoned with, at least here in Michigan.

so yeah- i support the workers.
my concern about whether or not it's a paid day off is for the workers who couldn't afford a short week.

(12,392 posts)I just assumed that a day off to vote would mean "with pay", and I thought you were being churlish to question it, so I googled the facts. As it turns out, a day off to vote was instituted by the UAW years ago, and therefore is nothing new. Just a warm and fuzzy bit of political nonsense from the company execs to make them look good. Oh well... that's business, I guess.
BlueMan Votes
(903 posts)the headline of the OP is a little misleading in that regard- chrysler didn't give them the day off, it was negotiated. is there any info as to whether it was negotiated as a paid or un-paid day off? i didn't see any.
P.S.- My first ocean dives were out of Tavernier- we stayed at "Frank's Keyhaven Resort". the owner (frank) was a former airline exec who gave discounts to airline employees(any airline).
It was a GREAT place to stay, and we even went back twice more.
