Los Angeles Times: Tea party activists blame losses on Republican establishment

Angry tea party activists say Mitt Romney was too moderate and the GOP undermined 'true conservative' candidates.

By Robin Abcarian, Los Angeles Times

November 11, 2012

Mitt Romney's loss to President Obama on Tuesday unleashed predictable angst and debate in a Republican Party that must now decide how to attract a more diverse electorate.

But for conservatives who identify with the tea party, one emotion seemed to dominate all others: a white-hot anger at the Republican establishment. Tea party supporters are angry at the GOP for embracing as its presidential nominee a "moderate" like Romney. For undermining "true conservative" candidates. And for "choosing to ignore" the conservative agenda.

Wednesday, the political direct-mail pioneer Richard Viguerie gathered a group of disenchanted conservatives for a news conference in Washington. Calling Romney's loss "the death rattle" of the GOP, Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com, said, "The battle to take over the Republican Party begins today."

He called upon the Republican leadership to resign for its part in the "epic election failure of 2012." That includes Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who has not announced whether he will run for the post again, House Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky.

But he didn't stop there.

I kinda thinken the cliff has some advantages, rolls back all the tax cuts for the 1% and how else could we achieve 250 b/year in defense cuts. Krugman predicts a slight recession and a much stronger economy afterward. We do need to deal with debt. the recovery IS very weak. I'll admit I don't have all the details. But what were able to achieve through the house will be pablum. If we don't strengthen the dollar, I worry they will trade oil in China currency. We need to strengthen our economy and jobs base.

The teabaggers still control the House, so any tax cut that excludes the 1% will be DOA.

The recession won't be "slight", it will be massive, and we'll be stuck in it for a long time with no way to do any kind of stimulus.

92. The deficit and debt are byproducts
Mon Nov 12, 2012, 10:41 AM
Nov 2012

The debt is not the problem people tend to think. Congress could choose to coin new money to pay it off and cover its ongoing net spending. Because our government issues dollars, it has never needed to borrow in order to spend. (We had a period of a self-imposed gold standard, but that ended more than 40 years ago.) Such a dramatic decision would surely create inflation in the short run, but would absolutely eliminate the debt (over the next 20 years). It would also keep the overnight rate near zero (which Congressional borrowing has avoided).

The deficit arises because the private sector is choosing to save and import more than it exports. If the governmental sector does not run an adequate deficit (which it currently is not) we see incomplete utilization of our productive capacity (unemployment). This triggers additional government spending on unemployment and welfare programs, increasing the deficit. It also forces people in the private sector who lose jobs to spend their savings. Between these two factors the accounting balances again but people are less happy. The only real choices for the government are "How many people will we keep unemployed?" and "How will we allocate our net spending (deficit)?"

The debt is actually a measure of American prosperity: every dollar borrowed by our government either ends up in a private account or in foreign hands in exchange for real goods (including foreign currency). Our government did not have to borrow that money; Congress has the power to coin money as it sees fit (see Article II, section 8 of the Constitution). But, in addition to benefiting bankers, it does give us a helpful tool to measure American prosperity.

The demographics of the US have changed, the "r" party has not. What passes for the "r" party today can be best described as Dixiecrats. Nixon's Southern Strategy was viable in 1968, it is not today. My neighbors, who are educated, sane people DO NOT get it.

The "r" party may truly implode the day the winning candidates are both non-Caucasian.

My neighbors know I am Obama/Democrat supporter. The day the husband (and don't get me wrong, we get along with our neighbors) ask me why, I am going to answer this way: in 2010, "r" candidates ran on job creation on the state and federal level. At the state level, vaginas and voter suppression were their major efforts (V&V as I call it). At the federal level, tax cuts, deregulation, repeal of the Affordable Care Act and denying Obama 2nd term were their major efforts.

IMHO, universal health care will be here soon. The ACA is the hammer some needed.

If the Republicans is to go further to the right now , they have to turn to the nazis - or the fascist as they are the only way they still can be mounted as a "serious" participant in any election..

The Tea Party candidates, it the ones who could ruin everything republicans stand for - not that they have not doing their best to do exactly that for the last decade or so already.. But it is maybe for the best - that the republicans -and their "tea-party" groups is killing of the party all together - and hopefully the moderates (who still exist) can make a new party, who can work together for the best of the country. What we look at today, is a long death bed for the current republican party - who claim to be conservative, but in reality it is a long time since the republican party could call them self anything near a conservative party - they are just utterly nuts..

If Romney was a moderate - I fear for the next candidate - he was worse than Bush jr.. Who was horrible.. The next republican candidate for the US presidency, if even Romney was a moderate have to anything near Djengis Khan or Attila the Hun who kind of turned Europe upside down for a while..

Abe Lincoln, and Dwight "Ike) Eisenhower would not have understand the party of today - by todays standard no one of them would have been electable for anything in the Republican party - they would both be to liberal, to moderate to soft to the current environment in the republican party.. As the current republican Party is full of pepole who might need some deep needed help in a mental institution..

Check out this video of the Wiking German stormtrooper Nazi reenactment group. They would dress up like this and march around. For "historical education purposes" you understand. One of their members was Rich Iott, who became the 2010 nominated Republican who ran against Representative Marcy Kaptur in Ohio.

&feature=player_embedded&bpctr=1352637652

But I wouldn't be surprised if their attempts to take over the GOP fail. They're so far off the deep end that their own party itself could turn against them in primaries. Especially now that the GOP establishment can blame the Tea Party for the 2012 losses. After all, they'd probably have the Senate by now if not for Akin and his ilk. You can be sure that from here on out the GOP "moderates" will go after them like never before.

I would call the Tea Party the Creep Party.

I do remember rep Marcy Kaptur in Ohio - I even commented on that case last year, rather tasteless I would say... And the "education" bit of it - I'm not sure, I have relatives and family who once was fighting them on real - and they kind of "immunized" med against this fellows... The nazi germans was not exactly the nice bunch of people, and I'm I'm not wrong, this guys is not playing around in Whermact uniforms, but rather the Waffen SS whose hallmark was a trail of blood and destruction in their wake, almost all over Europe.. Not that Whermact was any better, but at least they as "regular army soldiers"..

They might turn against each other in the end - they have already started the civil war, inside their own party - and it is just a matter of time before the first casualties of that civil war will be known... And the neo-nazism in US is on the grow - and have been that for many years now - something that scare me, as I know to a degree what nazism is all about - and it is not exactly any better with the neo-nazism than it was with the old nazism - they are at least as violent as the old guard was- but far less organized than the old bunch was.. If the neo-nazism ever got the same level of organization talent as Hitler did with his original nazism - then US will be in trouble for sure.. But they do not have any Hitler to lean on (even if he was a devil, he was a master in making people do what he wanted them to do in a way he wanted them to do)

If if exist any GOP "moderates" in the Republican Party's more higher excelons today - they should have tried to take back their party a long way ago - as it is today the Tea Party, and the extremists have already taken over the party - and is stealing it blind by acting in a way that most moderates in the GOP would find disgusting.. But the bully party have taken over the power, and it is not easy to take back the controls from bullies - it is very similar to the bullies in the school yard - they act one way when others with power are in the area - a whole different way when the bullies are on their own, out of sight from the ones with power.. The Tea Party is nothing more than a gang of bullies who acted as the GOP bully arm - and then managed to take over the party... It will take a long time before the Republican Party can make it from this attack from the far right in the US. The brand of GOP is destroyed or damaged for at least a generation because of the last decade of fooling to the far right.. I Doubt the republicans will be able to control anything for years and years - and as their power base shrunk, they will get more and more desperate to make their voice heard.. What we know hear, about seeding from the Republic, to go on a rampage against liberals, communist, socialism and every imagine "enemy" on the left side of the political spectrum is something that SHOULD be acted up on.. Because it will just be worse as the reality of this election goes true the rank and file to the bottom of the pile.. It will not be a nice picture when it all goes south, so to say..

Nov 2012

I figure those that hold the purse strings wouldn't allow the 'followers' to be active before the election; and since they lost, well, I guess they'll be busy the next four years.

Had Romney won, I bet the teabaggers would have been pretty much deactivated.

33. And Richard Viguerie of all people is their leader?
Sun Nov 11, 2012, 02:43 AM
Nov 2012

Viguerie has been around since 1961, when he became the executive secretary of Young Americans for Freedom. As an organizer and the inventor of right-wing, direct-mail fundraising, he was one of the pioneers of of the movement conservatism that pretty much took over the party in 1980.

Over the course of his career, he's worked hand in glove with everyone from rogue CIA agents to Reverend Moon.

As a fundraiser, he set the standard that it was acceptable for conservatives to cheat other conservatives in order to enrich themselves -- the premise that may have undone the Romney campaign.

And now he wants to lead the Tea Partiers out of the wilderness? Just who's crazy here?

Huh?
How does this logic work?
If the Republican had been more conservative all the voters would have suddenly switched from liberal to conservative?
Methinks theythinks not at all.

Because this means that the same idiots who droved the GOP off the cliff will keep their hands on the wheel, and their pedal to the metal. in 2016, the SMART thing would be for the GOP to run a "moderate" while wearing hair shirts to act sorry for 30 years of wrecking the nation.

However, as someone else pointed out here, as lojg as they act batshit crqazy, the DLC will say "we need to go to the center!"

Sun Nov 11, 2012, 08:45 AM
Nov 2012

Hitler and the Nazi agenda was considered crazy and out there early on. But it didn't take them long to gain/usurp power and exact a heavy toll on the world that is still being felt. I'd be very cautious about considering this just a laughing matter and joking about sending money to these people. Such rhetoric will embolden them and make their cause all the more justified in their own minds. It is funny how crazy is catching. Over the past 10 years I've watched a mentality develop that I never though possible. And it gets stronger and more pervasive. So, laugh if you will. I for one will shudder and hope that we've learned our lessons from the past and can actively work to not let these people gain power.

hubby a couple of days ago said, "the repug party is starting to remind me of the nazis." anti-homosexual, anti-minorities, anti-women, anti-labor, pro-business are some of the things under hitler. and the rabid brownshirts were an ignorant violent lot who were eventually betrayed by hitler.

however, we are not as homogeneous as the past german state. we are very much a diverse society; and if they even attempted the bullshite on the public; well, there's much more of us than them. and, that includes us anglos that don't go along with their hatred.

62. Sorry but I would tend to blame it more on Mitt Romney
Sun Nov 11, 2012, 09:53 AM
Nov 2012

I think one of Mitt's biggest flaws this election was that he did everything to cater to everyone and every extreme instead of just sticking with the person who won the state of Massachusetts for governor. I think we tend to forget there is a whole country out there that doesn't really belong to the extreme left OR extreme right.

I could use Delaware as an example. Because our primaries are closed and there aren't that many republicans in our state, a loop job extremist like Christine O'Donnell was able to upset the very moderate and very popular with everyone Mike Castle. But in the end when the entire voter population has to decide between batshit crazy and normal, most of the time normal will win. Sure, thanks to redistricting we make it easier for batshit crazy to win but look at the senate races and how many swing states rejected batshit crazy senate candidates in favor of sane ones.

Sun Nov 11, 2012, 10:18 AM
Nov 2012

Meanwhile I would like for Obama to remind Republicans during negotiations that they need to have the Latino vote (Republicans are asking for this first, of course). Then tell these Republicans that unless they first pass the Obama Tax Plan, raising taxes on the $250,000 or more crowd, that he will only offer very radical immigration reform, including banning states like AZ from their racist laws and procedures, for them to vote on until the next election so as to obtain a majority of Democrats in the house. But if they fix the fiscal crisis his way, then Obama could allow a comprehensive plan which will give states some leeway.

This is called negotiation!

66. The problem with their doubling-down on the crazy
Sun Nov 11, 2012, 10:40 AM
Nov 2012

is that lots of people live in areas under Republican domination, and there will be a lot of suffering borne if they stagger even further to the right. Just in my state of Indiana we pioneered voter suppression via ID requirements (not-so-coincidentally accompanied by motor vehicle bureau branch closings in urban areas) and had right-to-work rammed through the legislature.

While I agree that on a national level moving the Republicans to the right will diminish their influence (thanks, teabaggers, for making room for a Democrat to replace Lugar in the Senate!), I don't think it's worth the price we'd have to pay in terms of workers' rights, destruction of education (we had to fight off a creationism bill last legislative session in addition to the ongoing battle against school takeovers), etc. in the "red states."

Shameful selling off the lives of other people, not himself or his and those who agree with him on the price of one human life.

wow.

Paul Ryan is done with American politics. You just can't beat selling people's lives for having a significant, long lived, political problem. He's over. I really can't see how he can survive politically now. Killing people and letting them die for a price is just effing amazing, especially when we look at everything that has happened with the election cycle this time around. Astounding rise of a people's movement for USA!
