Report: Menendez faces ethics complaint
Source: Politico
The elections over but Republicans arent giving up their fight to tarnish Sen. Bob Menendez.
Middlesex County Republicans filed an ethics complaint against the New Jersey Democrat less than a week after his reelection, accusing him of violating Senate rules by failing to seek permission or disclose travel and lodging provided by a campaign donor, the Washington Free Beacon reported Monday.
County Republicans have asked the Senate Ethics Committee to investigate why Menendez did not seek permission from the Senate or report several trips he took to Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic since 2010. According to the Free Beacon, Menendez took at least four trips on a corporate jet owned by Salomon Melgen, who has donated more than $200,000 to Democrats since the early 1990s, including nearly $13,000 to Menendez.
It does not appear that Senator Menendezs apparent acceptance of private jet travel and luxury lodging was permitted by Senate gift rules, states the complaint, according to the Free Beacon. Nor does it appear that Senator Menendez disclosed acceptance of this travel and lodging on his financial disclosure formas he would be required to do even if the gifts were otherwise permissible.

(12,545 posts)Republicans are jerkoffs. Rove got Christie to investigate Menendez for specious reasons. It's why he wasn't fired as a united States Attorney.
Same shit, different day.

I don't care if this is a Democrat or a Republican, this is essentially lobbying in a back-handed form...

(9,612 posts)Those of us in Jersey know that. I couldn't even hold my nose enough to vote for him this year. He's part of the old-school machine which is mobbed up to the earlobes.
My only hope is that he can ride out the shitstorm until January 2014, when Governor Booker can replace him with another Democrat.

The Sen. pointedly did not get involved in the whole Higher Ed "reform" plan hatched by Chris Christie and George Norcross (the S Jersey Democratic power broker), which was really just an attempt to liquidate Rutgers assets in order to give then to the Cooper-Rowan Medical School in Camden (Norcross's pet project). Menendez's silence was culpable I think, and indicated a lack of a principled stand on the issue, much unlike his colleague Frank Lautenberg, who had plenty to say in support of our cause.
A poor decision on his part (especially since we eventually faced Christie and Norcross down), and one that many S Jersey Democrats are not likely to soon forget.
