Rick Perry Takes Stand On Texas Secession Issue

Source: Huffingtonpost

Texas Gov. Rick Perry does not stand behind a secession petition filed with the White House by a Lone Star State resident in the aftermath of the presidential election.

The Dallas Morning News reports that the Republican governor's press secretary, Catherine Frazier, said in an email that Perry "believes in the greatness of our Union and nothing should be done to change it." She added, "But he also shares the frustrations many Americans have with our federal government. Now more than ever our country needs strong leadership from states like Texas, that are making tough decisions to live within their means, keep taxes low and provide opportunities to job creators so their citizens can provide for their families and prosper."

Several years ago, however, Perry declined to rule out the possibility that Texas could secede from the United States if significant changes weren't made to the nation's economic policies.

"There's a lot of different scenarios," he said at a Tea Party rally in 2009, CNN reported at the time. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

It didn't work for Reagan, it didn't work for W and it doesn't work now. It's just a gift to the already wealthy.

It is sold as something for nothing, i.e. lower these rates and revenue will magically increase. It didn't work out that way for Reagan or W, revenues decreased and we had record defecits.

Its a larger margin than some that Obama had in reliably blue states like Washington and Oregon. A lot of Democrats are just going to stay home on voting day because they know Texas is a red state. Texas has one of the lowest voter turnout rates in the nation.

Also there is always tremendous untapped resources for Democrats. Check out the age chart from this site...

http://smpbff1.dsd.census.gov/TheDataWeb_HotReport/servlet/HotReportEngineServlet?reportid=767b1387bea22b8d3e8486924a69adcd&emailname=essb@boc&filename=0328_nata.hrml

The green shows people who voted and the orange shows people who registered but didn't vote. People in the 60-69 age bracket had almost 3 times more people voting than people in the 18-29 bracket.

Redneck Texas would be all those rural counties that have no one in them. Maybe 9 electoral votes.

You end up with 20 electoral votes and 2 senators that would be bluer than blue.

California as three states would be all safely democratic.

If you secede:

1) You must pay for ALL federal military installations.

2) Indian reservations are sovereign, and subject to military action if their sovereignty is violated.

3) You don't get any nukes.

4) If you leave, you may not re-apply for admission for 50 years.

5) You may not blockade or interfere with river/sea/ocean transit.

6) In the event of a natural disaster, emergency assistance requested must be paid for when the service is rendered. Refugees will be accepted only their nation state agrees to pay for aid and shelter.

I am sure other folk will have other suggestions for this list.

I think they'll get as many nukes as they already have sitting on their territory because if you try to take them they'll set them off. Oh, and the majority of the US military is from the south, so good luck enforcing any of that.

What'll happen is y'all will end up sitting next to Fundietopia, which will be indistinguishable from Iran. Except they'll be even crazier and they'll have nukes and be perfectly happy to use them whenever a whim strikes them.

without the codes?

The entire command and control structure of nuclear weapons is designed to prevent them from being used without orders from the CiC (that would be Obama)

Also, you are telling me that they will detonate nuclear weapons on their own turf? Fine by me.

And, it depends which branch of the military you are talking about. The Navy, for example, is mostly from the Northeast and West coast of the U.S. The Air Force is nationally dispersed, but with a lot of bases in the North along the coasts.

The Army and Marines have very FEW nukes, and those are smaller tac weapons being phased out.

The problem with sticking a bunch of people with no attachment to reality on an island and telling them to pick a leader is they're going to pick the craziest one. Even if they didn't have them to start with their main goal in life would be to get one.

My main objection isn't the nukes anyway. It's the part long before that when they wipe out anyone that isn't straight, white, and Christian.

command and control structure is that nukes cannot be detonated without a code which is only transmitted by the president. Without it, they have some very expensive toys, but no weapons.

Secession would not be overnight, but a gradual process of over a decade (since Texas and others would have to pay for federal lands and facilities before they could leave the union).

I am talking about a governmental divorce, not the murder-suicide pact that was the Civil War.

The cool thing about Texas is that by the time ten years went by, the state would be under Latino control and secession would be cancelled.

Now South Carolina just needs to go. It has been a pain in the ass since 1783.
