this could be serious. on one hand i'd love to see China fail in a war. But then, many people will die in this, at the end of the day, not something i'd like to see

(8,332 posts)Least of all China.
Why would China give additional resources to a military that has proven -with ample resources, to mishandle it entirely and is losing a war to a substantially smaller and less equipped nation? That would be a bad investment, and China generally makes good investments. Like T-notes.

(3,339 posts)for China to get to involved unless they have made a very scary decision, that being that this is it. The second that they were to get involved our sanctions would be crushing and I believe others would follow. India would then be forced to make a decision or become what? I think The PRC would know this and choose the longer view. Just one mans opinion and hope.

(32,082 posts)Both China and the U.S. know it. China (and India) are buying as much Russian oil as it can to help Russia evade oil sanctions. Do you hear the U.S. saying anything about that? Silence.

(2,856 posts)if China does this (and I really don't think they are that short-sighted and stupid) one thing's for certain. Their economy, whatever its status is, would collapse overnight.

(8,020 posts)Sanctions must kick in, Pres Biden must do everything in his power to end economic ties with China, intrustial and consumer ties. We as citizens will need to get involved by demonstrating outside chinamarts aka Walmarts and all china owned property in the US.

(43,299 posts)The Czar controlled Russia, pre-1917. Then the commies took over, and Commissar's ran state enterprises and lived lavish lifestyles as political cronies while dishing off peanuts to the peasants. Then the Soviet Union fell and state enterprises were sold to oligarchs which concentrated power. Now capitalism is trying to upend that game so free markets, and western banks, win and the profits accrue to them and private enterprise. Make no mistake, private enterprise is different from oligarchs. They're both private, but one is very concentrated, while the other divides the income stream into smaller pieces. So yes, we could have a hot war over this, in my view.

I agree, a real possibility.

(3,361 posts)will necessarily prevent any direct military involvement in the conflict. I think the trade war that would ensue from the placement of sanctions on (and by) all involved parties would directly interfere with Beijing's economic balancing act.
Though the two nations enjoy better relations now than in the past 40 years, it's relevant to note that China does not recognize Russia's annexation of Crimea, and Russia does not support China's claims in the South China Sea.
And China is in a more advantageous position to leverage more agreeable short-term contracts for the imports of Russian oil and petroleum products.
