Turkey Raps Israel On Gaza, To Discuss With U.S., Egypt

(Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan decried Israeli's air strikes on Gaza on Friday as a pre-election stunt and said he would discuss the crisis with Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi in Cairo this weekend.
Under Erdogan's Islamist-rooted AK Party, Turkey has sought to use its clout as a rising democratic power in the Muslim world to increase its influence in the Middle East, distancing itself from former ally Israel.
Erdogan said he would speak by phone with U.S. President Barack Obama later on Friday and that Ankara was also seeking talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid the prospect of a full Israeli ground invasion.
The United States says it has asked Turkey and Egypt to encourage the Islamist Hamas movement that rules Gaza to cease rocket fire into Israel, but Erdogan laid the blame for the deepening crisis firmly on the Jewish state.

(5,937 posts)They had made great democratic reforms as a result of the founding of the republic in the 1920's one major one was separation of church and state and other secular reforms. It seems they have been gradually moving back to a religious state, in action if not in name.

(12,028 posts)In Istanbul, they're pretty liberal. I ran into atheists, and know couples living together out of wedlock. Women wear miniskirts and I suspect the majority of medical students are female.
But go east, toward the Syrian border, and things get conservative.
I'm all for this. Netanyahu most not drive the Policy. The same case with Hamas. Both of them need to be put on a leash until the adults that matter make the decisions. As far as our Senate, they need to take advice from the President for their consent and not hamper our President to make Foreign Policy issues in our best Interests as well as all the participants. The Congress submits that they represent the Public but who the hell do they think the President represents here! The President should remind them Foreign Policy was also discussed in this election, and the country also decided on the direction of our Foreign Policy. The Congress therefore should help the President all they can and not be trying to undermine what the President was elected to do.

(2,979 posts)but I'm meaning it's gonna get ugly as far a violence goes.
If Israel invades with ground forces, a lot more will die.

(6,852 posts)So far the dead in Gaza have been mostly Hamas members.
If a ground assault takes place it will no longer be the case because terrorists are cowards... they use civilians as shields.

(13,184 posts)The dead in Gaza include civilians, including children.
Gaza City is a massive urban area. People who attack cities from the air are war criminals.

(3,316 posts)maybe if they would stop bombing Israel, no more children would end up dead
sounds about right. one person says its all the Israelis fault, the other the palestinians. seems we've already taken stances on this issue and no ones changing sides. this shit stinks and its the same smell every time a rocket launches. both sides see deaths and its both sides faults for starting it.

(2,477 posts)Thanks for that admission.
Would that also make the US and the UK war criminals during WWII? After all, we did attack Germany and Japan from the air.
