Iowa GOP declares Rick Santorum winner of the Iowa caucuses

The Iowa Republican Party late Friday declared Rick Santorum the winner of the 2012 Iowa caucuses.

The party earlier this week issued the final canvassed results of the Jan. 3 race, which showed the former Pennsylvania senator overtaking Mitt Romney by a 34-vote margin. But in doing so, it noted that results from eight precincts weren’t certified, which led to confusion over whether it was officially declaring a winner or left the race as a virtual tie.

In a statement released just before midnight Friday, though, the party officially declared Santorum the winner.

“In order to clarify conflicting reports and to affirm the results released Jan. 18 by the Republican Party of Iowa, Chairman Matthew Strawn and the State Central Committee declared senator Rick Santorum the winner of the 2012 Iowa Caucus,” the party wrote.

Too late: The perception of a Romney win set in on the 4th, and has driven the narrative far more than this official announcement will.

Further proof that the Iowa Caucuses are a joke.

And that's why the caucuses are a waste of time. What happened on the 3rd was the first step in a long process that includes county/district meetings and a state convention. In 2008, John McCain finished third or fourth in Iowa (Huckabee "won&quot , but months later, every single delegate the state sent to the GOP convention was a McCain delegate.

The same will happen this time: When the state convention finally rolls around, the nominee will almost certainly be known, and you can bet your bottam dollar that he'll get all of Iowa's delegates.

Primaries assign delegates directly and immediately: Caucuses (at least on the Republican side) are nothing more than beauty contests.

of the total irrelevance of the Iowa Caucuses. Let Iowa hold a true primary and it may gain some cred.
