(BANGKOK) President Barack Obama said Sunday an incursion by Israels forces into the Gaza Strip could only deepen its death toll, cautioning against an escalation even as he defended the Jewish states right to defend itself. Obama also warned Palestinians the crisis could crush peace hopes for years.
Israel has every right to expect that it does not have missiles fired into its territory, Obama said at the start of a three-nation tour in Asia.
If that can be accomplished without a ramping up of military activity in Gaza, thats preferable, he said. Its not just preferable for the people of Gaza. Its also preferable for Israelis, because if Israeli troops are in Gaza, theyre much more at risk of incurring fatalities or being wounded.
Obamas comments came as Israels campaign against Hamas militants in Gaza blasted into its fifth day. Israel is at a crossroads of whether to launch a ground invasion or pursue Egyptian-led truce efforts. Obama sought to defend the U.S. allys rights while pushing for a halt in the violence.

(1,933 posts)that Obama has concerns about Israeli soldiers being harmed if they INVADE Palestine again. He should tell them to STAY OUT and both sides get to the negotiating table.
Can't stand the Dem posture on this issue.

(3,860 posts)Now you're just being silly.
certainly agree with you here. The only way they can take care of Hamas is to send in ground forces, instead of killing innocent civilians. Their lives should mean just as much as innocent Israeli lives. President Obama needs to lead on this issue instead of giving Israel a blank check. You either go all in or you don't. What needs to be done is order both sides to cease fire and send people directly in to settle the problem.
The United States needs to reopen negotiatiions and make both sides come to the table, just like President Clinton was doing before his second term ended. Clinton ran out of time before he got this done. Obama needs to pick it back up. He needs to get a two state solution period and not just wish it would happen. As far as I'm concerned, the United States does have all the cards if they would use them. They can pressure Israel, the Palestinians and the Egyptians. Everyone of the participants depend on U.S. assistance in some form.

(1,560 posts)We need a much more hands-off foreign policy. Picking sides in these conflicts is what always gets us into entanglements. What we should be doing is ending all foreign military aid worldwide. If these countries want to fight each other, let them do it with their own money. Sick of us propping up all these elitists while the average working class person suffers.

(15,438 posts)and her right to defend herself in a hostile territory, it appears that President Obama does not want Israel to begin a war against Palestine. And that's a good thing.

(23,148 posts)And, as usual, Obama has put his best people on it. There will be an outcome.
I repeat, there WILL be an outcome. Things just keep moving incrementally excremental. But not to worry.

(22,271 posts)resigned during the * administration, it's times like these when those resignations are deeply felt. Not to mention the loss of one of our greatest: Richard Holbrooke. Where is our S.O.S. on this? This situation has already escalated greatly in just a matter of days and it shows no sign of slowing down unless there is an intervention allowing for a cease fire.
