St. Lucie recount results shows Patrick Murphy still ahead of Allen West

Source: WPTV

FORT PIERCE -- Results of recounting more than 37,000 St. Lucie County ballots were announced shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday and preliminary figures given by Canvassing Board member Tod Mowery placed Jupiter Democrat Patrick Murphy farther ahead of Republican Allen West than before the two-day effort began.

Murphy campaign senior advisor Eric Johnson was quick to reaffirm victory.

"As far as we're concerned, this puts an end to it," Johnson said. "The West people demanded a recount. They got that retabulation and Patrick Murphy gained a margin of 242 votes.

Mowery said the final count was 65,841 votes for Murphy and 52,704 for West. The results still are unofficial.

Please note this is separate from the earlier story about West trying to get an exemption from the noon deadline after it was missed.

This new story about the actual recount results shows that West would have been losing by an even larger margin with those results counted.

His district runs through a northeastern slice of Palm Beach County, into always red Martin County and then up into St. Lucie County. He won his slice of Palm Beach County by 190 votes...even though Obama carried the county 58.21% to 41.18% and Dem Bill Nelson won his senate race 63.70% to 34.84%. There was an Independent running in that race...as well as 10 other candidates in the presidential contest.... Residents of his district include Jack Nicklaus, Craig Norman and dozens of other multimillionaires of assorted stripes. He was my representative until I moved 11 months ago...he is currently still my ex-husbands rep. The ex split his ticket this year, normally a die-hard Republican he voted for Romney, Patrick Murphy and Bill Nelson.

West seeks hearing after Murphy declares victory when St. Lucie board misses noon deadline; unofficial results have Murphy increasing lead

By Christine Stapleton
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

FORT PIERCE — Patrick Murphy’s campaign declared victory this afternoon in his race for Congress against U.S. Rep. Allen West, in which final — but uncertified — totals from St. Lucie County elections officials showed him finishing with 50.16 percent of the vote.

West’s camp, however, said it has no intention of conceding and that Gov. Rick Scott and Secretary of State Ken Detzner “will have to take a look at these recounts,” West campaign manager Tim Edson said.

Preliminary numbers released around 2 p.m. by the canvassing board show West, R-Palm Beach Gardens, with 52,704 votes in St. Lucie County and Murphy with 65,841. The state Division of Elections website this afternoon lists Murphy the winner with 50.28 to West’s 49.7 — a spread of 0.58 percent — when the St. Lucie totals are added to those of Martin County and the parts of Palm Beach County that are within District 18.

Recount is completed and Murphy wins. Hopefully Mr. West will now concede as he has truly lost.

But the strange thing in that story was the regular person who was in charge was unable to make a statement because she went into the hospital.

Her substitute said the counting was finished, and according to law Murphy is the winner, but there is nothing official yet. By all accounts, Murphy beat him by more than required for recount when the totals were made.

I don't put it past the GOP and West to hold this up in court for months with no proof, the way they did with Coleman and Franken. They want to deny Democrats key votes in early 2013.

I hope you will find a moment to let us know if an 'official' announcement or a West concession speech is made. TIA.
