Top Republican Suggests Obama Sat On Petraeus Scandal Until After The Election

Source: ThinkProgress

By Igor Volsky posted from ThinkProgress Justice on Nov 18, 2012 at 5:00 pm

During a Sunday appearance on Meet The Press, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers (R-MI) baselessly claimed that President Obama knew about Gen. David Petraeus’ affair before the election, implying that the administration somehow manipulated the timeline of the scandal. “I’m not sure the president was not told before the Election Day,” he asserted. “The Attorney General said that the Department of Justice did not notify the President. But we don’t know if the Attorney General did.”

Attorney General Eric Holder defended his department’s handling of the investigation earlier this week, noting that standard protocol prohibits DOJ from sharing information about pending investigations with members of Congress or the president, so long as they do not undermine national security. Later in the program, former Clinton Chief of Staff and Chair of the Center for American Progress, John Podesta, explained that the rule has been in place since 1993 and is designed to prevent politics from contaminating the process. He encouraged Obama to improve that buffer:

PODESTA: With respect to what Andrea [Mitchell] said about Mike Rogers tossing this hand grenade on the table, I would note he did it with zero evidence. In 1993, back to the Clinton era, Andrea will remember this, I recommended strict protocols between the Justice Department and the White House, which were implemented. I’m sure they have changed to some extent. But there is a reason why the Justice Department doesn’t talk to the White House about ongoing active investigations. I think that President Obama ought to direct the Attorney General to obviously review those and report to him about whether they could be improved. But there are very good reasons why the Justice Department doesn’t talk to the White House about investigations.

Watch it:

Justice Department officials had known about the investigation since the summer, but were told that the matter did not affect national security. Petraeus’s boss, Director of National Intelligence James R. Clapper Jr, was notified about the affair on Election Day, after the FBI concluded its review. That night, Clapper advised Petraeus to resign.

So both of them knew about it in October, so the question should be why did they keep silent? This whole thing is just BS from the right trying to find something to impeach the president on, but it isn't going to happen. There is nothing here but BS coming from the right, and these idiots that are trying to make something up about the issue are only making themselves look like morons, same as McCain and Graham and their crap about Susan Rice. These sore losers simply need to grow up and stop acting like children.

13. And exactly how would this Petraeus sex scandal helped
Sun Nov 18, 2012, 06:52 PM
Nov 2012

Mr. Romney and the pukes? Petraeus was a throw back from Bush days, all the "sex-participants" were pukes. And the pukes in Congress that supposedly knew about this sat on the info. I don't think it would have been good for Eric Cantor's race against his opponent for people to realize that he was sitting on a sex scandal to help the pukes look good.

Actually, the pukes knowing that Petraues was involved in a sex scandal and knowing that he was head of the CIA and the one who was in charge of ultimately sending out Susan Rice on Sunday talk shows with information that ended up making President Obama's administration looking like it was lying and being dishonest about the investigations into the Benghazi attacks; all the while, making Susan Rice and her boss look incompetent just before the elections, actually played better for the pukes and their endless bs about Benghazi and trying to make it into a Watergate issue.

Honestly, it was so obvious before the elections who was watching Faux News and listening to Right Wing talk radio because they were the only people in any room who would bring up the Benghazi issue like there was some big plot or conspiracy. Most people who were thinking about everyday life and deciding on the elections were watching the President in action over the hurricane and many in the country were concerned about those effected by the storm... The other issues they seemed to talk about were jobs, economy, their absolute disgust with money bags and his 47% comments caught on tape.... And for minority members of the country, and women includes (especially younger women), there was more abject fear as to how Mitt Romney and a Republican House of Reps would completely F' them over Mitt made it into the White House. It's not like we haven't seen the consequences of the 2010 elections and the Tea Bagging ass hats try to limit birth control, shove dildo shaped sonogram equipment up vaginas for a closer look at a rapists baby a woman wanted aborted or the quips about "food stamp president" or States trying to wipe out Dem Party voters with their suppression tactics.

I don't see how the sex scandal would have supposedly helped Mitt? And if Pres Obama did know, he apparently didn't think it warranted exposure... Now, if the DoJ did their job like they seemed to have done, look into the matter to see if there was any national security issues, then Pres Obama wouldn't have been in the need to know category. However, the investigation became complicated when the low level FBI pukey shirtless dude decided there was more to this and went around his superiors to let puke congressmen know about the issue and that maybe they had a trap for Obama to look bad... Instead, the asshat tipped the hands of the scale and forced the story and Petraues (their Golden General) into having to resign and having reporters follow all the sordid Soap legs that followed out of it all.

Personally, I think Cantor and the other R rep from (Washington?) need to be investigated for ethics breach and possible national security issues and possible treason if they were going to use this info in against the govt for their party or their own political agendas. I see Cantor has his head layed low these days. Boehner may be able to reign in his party or certain members enough to actually pass some legislation. I haven't seen Cantor's swarmy face all over the TV trying to upstage Boehner and control the talking points for the GOP in congress.

I still hope they can get rid of that puke. Put him in hand cuffs and do the perp march right out of congress. He is an evil bastard who had way too much power and control over the tea party fresh meat. It was an obvious power struggle at the top between that little twerp and the weeping drunkard who was used to cutting deals over drunk golf rounds at the country club.

telling you this is what the Republicans are up to. These people are up to no good. First it was slandering Rice and now they are back to accusing Eric Holder. They are just trying to plant a seed just like their luny base. The Republican Party needs new leaders and is just dysfunctional. You see the reason now. It is because of their leaders in Congress.

to his advantage, so close to the election. Everyone knows Petraeus is a repug, formerly one of the most respected of repugs, who previously had notions of holding high office, maybe even the presidency.

It just wouldn't have been right for Obama to use the guys disgraceful fall for political ends, yet another repug unfit for office, to further boost his own party's results in this last election!

It's time to do the business they were sent to Washington to do. And, it wasn't to make baseless charges against Ambassador Rice or to demand instant knowledge of what happened in Benghazi when no one had the complete picture and still don't. The American people get this and get that the Republicans are seeking a scandal, any scandal, even a non scandal rather than to do the serious work of governing which, I guess, is just too boring/difficult for them to do.

Yeah, we know they hate sex, but murdering people in foreign countries is jut fine...just so long as we call it a war or something.

This sounds like another sleazy appeal to their 'base' (good word to describe their supporters: the lowest common denominator; buncha low life scuz bags ).

I guess they want to be sure and avoid any kind of well-reasoned examination of why they lost.

And McamyTaylor is right: actually governing, instead of slavering over supposed sex scandals seems to be beyond their feeble abilities.
