US, Britain warn of risks of Israeli ground war

Source: AP-Excite

By JIM KUHNHENN and ANNE FLAHERTY

BANGKOK (AP) - The U.S. and Britain on Sunday warned about the risks of Israel expanding its air assault on the Gaza Strip into a ground war, while vigorously defending the Jewish state's right to protect itself against rocket attacks.

The remarks by President Barack Obama and Britain Foreign Secretary William Hague were part of a diplomatic balancing act by the West as it desperately seeks an end to the escalating violence without alienating its closest ally in the region.

"Israel has every right to expect that it does not have missiles fired into its territory," President Barack Obama said at a news conference in Bangkok at the start of a three-nation visit to Asia.

"If that can be accomplished without a ramping up of military activity in Gaza, that's preferable," Obama said. "It's not just preferable for the people of Gaza. It's also preferable for Israelis, because if Israeli troops are in Gaza, they're much more at risk of incurring fatalities or being wounded."

he's in a tough spot, on the one hand, he HAS to support Israel and OTOH, he has to try not to piss off the Arab world.
My personal feeling is, and I've expressed it many times, is that Israel has every right to defend itself and that Hamas needs to stop the rocket attacks on Israel and both sides need to sit down and work out a just and equitable peace treaty that will benefit the whole region.
I know, I know, fat chance of that happening any time soon.

I really did not expect his son to end up like that. Sharon was at least one of the more pragmatic Israeli leaders.

The terrifying thing about that statement... is that I can't actually argue it. Out of that particular selection? yeah... yeah he was.

7. I think Sharon's problem was that the right leaned on him too hard.

A problem of many moderate leaders in history. At least Sharon founded a new party when it got to a breaking point. He has my admiration for doing at least that much. That takes courage.

The forces of the aggressor are much safer when they're dropping bombs onto houses from miles up in the air--the current all-American way of making war, it must be remembered. The people on the ground are not really considered an important part of the equation.
