Anonymous leaks personal information of 5,000 Israeli officials

Internet hacktivist group Anonymous has declared cyberwar on Israel, posting personal data of five thousand Israeli officials online.
The group used their Anonpaste.me site to address a message to the Israeli government before linking to the page with names, ID numbers and personal emails of 5,000 officials.
The message said: "It has come to our attention that the Israeli government has ignored repeated warnings about the abuse of human rights, shutting down the internet in Israel and mistreating its own citizens and those of its neighboring countries."

(7,318 posts)Notice they didn't go after the aggressor, Hamas, who started all of this with the rocket attacks. I wouldn't be surprised if this "Anonymous" crew/person is really a disgruntled Hamas hacker.

(4,444 posts)This isn't something that started a week ago with one group good and one group bad. To paint it as such is, at best, being overly simplistic.
If you read anonymous's original release they admit the situation is so confused that no one outside can easily or honestly take sides. It was only when Israel talked of cutting internet access to occupied territories that they responded.
And are you saying that all of anonymous is a 'disgruntled' (love the diminishing language) hacker? Or just this attack? ...'cuz you'd seem pretty silly if you thought the former.

(69,014 posts)If that was mentioned then I'm fine with the docu-dump. And my sympathies are not divided.

(7,318 posts)Not one single document released to the public from the Hamas government.
"This isn't something that started a week ago with one group good and one group bad. To paint it as such is, at best, being overly simplistic."
We're in an adult forum now. Focus, now, focus: Hamas rockets=straw.
-------------
"And are you saying that all of anonymous..."
'I don't want to be a conspiracy theorist here, so I acknowledge 'Anonymous' could, in this case, be just one person (apparently, anyone can use the moniker).
--------------
"...is a 'disgruntled' (love the diminishing language) hacker?"
I don't know the hacker personally, so 'disgruntled' is the harshest qualifier I felt should be used. If that is diminishing, I don't want to speculate on what 'perturbed', 'bellicose', 'angry', 'enraged', 'infuriated', 'maniacal', or even 'f***** up' would have brought in response.
--------------
"If you read anonymous's original release they admit the situation is so confused that no one outside can easily or honestly take sides."
"Anonymous" must be an insider then: he took a side.
--------------
" It was only when Israel talked of cutting internet access to occupied territories..."
So, if the hacker's attack came from inside Gaza, then the hacker has made the case that Israel's concerns regarding internet access were justified. In addition, the hacker believes, like Israel does, that information flow is a valid target in an escalating military conflict (hence his 5,000 email dump). Cyber warfare is here to stay. I don't think there will ever again be a military conflict in the future in which cyber and military warfare aren't merged.
I also don't think for one minute that the hacker's one-sided dump was altruistic. What really triggered the hacker's action? Hamas lobbing rocket after rocket into Israel and injuring Israelis? No. Israel retaliating by killing one of Hamas top military leaders in Gaza? No. Both sides escalating the conflict resulting in civilian casualties? Again, no! Ah, yes, here is the trigger. You said:
"It was only when Israel talked of cutting internet access to occupied territories that (Anonymous) responded."
So, only when the hacker's very livelihood, source of power, and sense of worth (Internet access) were threatened, his visceral response was to RETALIATE against the side threatening to cut off that access. Very noble.
Don't get me wrong. I am not against hackers having a whistler blower function on the world stage. I am conflicted, though, on how far hackers should interfere in a sovereign and democratically elected government's political decisions. Both Gaza and Israel ELECTED their governments democratically. This hacker was not justified in inserting himself into a military conflict by substituting his personal beliefs for a democratically elected government's reasoned response to a perceived threat based on a multitude of facts and figures at their disposal. Keep in mind, some of the facts considered by a government in their decision-making process are undoubtedly not computerized, and therefore are not even accessible to the hacker for him to use in his already compromised and myopic decision-making process. In a tense and escalating military conflict, do we really want hackers substituting their decisions for OURS (citizens as represented by their electors) under those, or any, circumstances. I don't.

(6,450 posts)that in this offensive alone, Israel has killed more women and children than from all of the Hamas rockets, EVER? In just one week?
Hamas rockets are like spitballs compared to Israel's US stocked weapons arsenal.
Did you know that the UN considers a military blockade an Act of War?

(26,624 posts)I won't get into that part... But she did come back and tell me she was confused as to why these two groups could not get along... They eat the same food and many speak the same language... And both sides want peace.... They want their children to learn and not fight.... Hopefully this can begin...

Not hard to believe, but why bother stopping the Rove/Romney steal of an election for a country that is already lost?
What am I missing here? I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer, so any info would be appreciated.

(706 posts)internet censorship, prosecution of whistle blowers and things of that nature. Now I know Obama isn't perfect as he HAS supported things like ACTA and TPP but I don't think Obama is evil at all, I think he's a good man but is wrong on those certain issues. I do support anonymous though as I think they have done a lot of good, if it weren't for their efforts our internet would have been censored by ACTA.

(5 posts)No, it took the New Right of Paul Weyrich 40 yrs to undermine our Democracy. We have just begun to fight back to restore Democracy. We are not Lost yet!! People Power AND thanks to Anonymous who actually did save our votes from Rove's grand plan to flip...but, we can get election reform and stop the use of voting machines!! Keep the ball rolling and don't stop because we were lucky to have anonymous' help. It's up to the People what happens in next election.

(5 posts)Anonymous has admitted that they were the ones to stopped Karl Rove from getting Romney the election. He planned to do the same crap that he did for bush's wins. Ohio's machines shut down at 11:14PM (2004) - data was transmitted to ORCA. Went the data was sent, Kerry was in the lead...when it got back...bush was. This time, the machines in Ohio went down at 11:13PM.. Once again, the data was sent to ORCA...BUT, this time, Anonymous had enough time to put a firewall up - under their password. ORCA techs tried 105 times to break the password; but, no could do, lol. The data was returned to Ohio untouched. Anonymous found three (3) tunnels that Rove had set up for 3 states. ALL were disrupted. THANK YOU Anonymous for protecting our votes!! Now, all we need to do is Remove all voting machines from ever being used and standardize election ballots. Handcounted Paper Ballots ONLY!!

(8,694 posts)Greetings World
For far too long, Anonymous has stood by with the rest of the world and watched in despair the barbaric, brutal and despicable treatment of the Palestinian people in the so called Occupied Territories by the Israel Defense Force. Like so many around the globe, we have felt helpless in the face of such implacable evil. And todays insane attack and threatened invasion of Gaza was more of the same.
But when the government of Israel publicly threatened to sever all Internet and other telecommunications into and out of Gaza they crossed a line in the sand. As the former dictator of Egypt Mubarack learned the hard way we are ANONYMOUS and NO ONE shuts down the Internet on our watch. To the IDF and government of Israel we issue you this warning only once. Do NOT shut down the Internet into the Occupied Territories, and cease and desist from your terror upon the innocent people of Palestine or you will know the full and unbridled wrath of Anonymous. And like all the other evil governments that have faced our rage, you will NOT survive it unscathed.
To the people of Gaza and the Occupied Territories, know that Anonymous stands with you in this fight. We will do everything in our power to hinder the evil forces of the IDF arrayed against you. We will use all our resources to make certain you stay connected to the Internet and remain able to transmit your experiences to the world. As a start, we have put together the Anonymous Gaza Care Package http://bit.ly/XH87C5 which contains instructions in Arabic and English that can aid you in the event the Israel government makes good on its threat to attempt to sever your Internet connection. It also contains useful information on evading IDF surveillance, and some basic first aid and other useful information. We will continue to expand and improve this document in the coming days, and we will transmit it to you by every means at our disposal. We encourage you to download this package, and to share it with your fellow Palestinians to the best of your ability.
We will be with you. No matter how dark it may seem, no matter how alone and abandoned you may feel know that tens of thousands of us in Anonymous are with you and working tirelessly around the clock to bring you every aid and assistance that we can.
We Are Anonymous
We Are Everywhere
We Are Legion
We Do Not Forgive
We Do Not Forget
To the oppressors of the innocent Palestinian people, it is too late to EXPECT US.
