Sen. Mark Warner passes on 2013 governor bid
Source: The Virginian-Pilot
After months of speculation, U.S. Sen. Mark Warner today announced he won't seek another term as governor, meaning whatever his political future holds is likely be oriented around Washington rather than the State Capitol.
"I loved being governor, but I have a different job now -- and it's here in the United States Senate," Warner said in a statement about his decision.
"At times, it's been frustrating, but I believe this work is important for Virginia and for our country, and I intend to see it through," he added.
Warner's decision effectively makes Northern Virginia businessman Terry McAuliffe the likely Democratic frontrunner for the 2013 gubernatorial nomination.

(95,337 posts)I suspect this might also be the reason why Bob Casey won't run against Tom Corbett.
Before a US Senator who becomes Governor-elect can actually be governor he has to resign.
That means the senate seat would become open BEFORE the old governor is replaced with the new Governor.
And I suspect Teabaggers like Corbett or McDonnell would not be so considerate to replace the senate seat with someone from the party of the senator vacating the seat.

Still......Virginia's Democratic Party needs to solidify BLUE and recapture the Governor's House.

(95,337 posts)and yet they don't want to make the senate any worse than what it is.

(25,453 posts)The problem is that it looks shitty for them to do that, because of they let the old Governor make the appointment, the new Senator would have an edge in seniority.

(182,877 posts)I know that Mark wanted to be Gov again and correct a lot of things but he was going to get NO cooperation from the rabid Republicans.
It smells like a Presidential run prep - but he needs to stay in the Senate to keep our 55 vote voting block.

(951 posts)But we here in Virginia are going to have to work for it. One thing I was struck by, doing canvassing for O, is how many people did not know who they were voting for senator, or seem to understand the importance of this vote. We need an O ground game here for this race as well, and a way to drive home the message that this race impacts everyone in Virginia, and they have a stake in it. Tie it into the national level with O. Think nationally, act locally. Voter reform would be a good issue.

(4,033 posts)this man will NEVER be elected Governor in VA and stop trying. They are insuring a Cuccinelli win and God help us Virginians when that happens. I was praying Warner would run. He'd win in a landslide. Fuck!

If the percentage of voters who said they'd definitely vote for McAulifee and those who "would consider" him are combined, he was 4% behind Cuccinelli and 8% behind Bolling.
But he has lots of room for improvement, since 32% of voters had "no opinion" of McAuliffe then (compared to 15% and 22% for Cuccinelli and Bolling).
28% said they definitely would NOT vote for McAuliffe, but there he has an advantage over the Republicans (a slight, 2%, advantage over Bolling, and a 13% advantage over Cuccinelli).
