WASHINGTON Citing threats against individuals former President Donald Trump has targeted, special counsel Jack Smith has asked a federal judge for a narrowly tailored gag order that restricts the 2024 presidential candidate from making certain extrajudicial statements about the election interference case brought against him.
A redacted copy of a government filing released Friday, after an order from U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan comes in connection with the election interference case, one of four criminal cases the former president is facing, two of which are federal.
The defendant has an established practice of issuing inflammatory public statements targeted at individuals or institutions that present an obstacle or challenge to him, the special counsel's office wrote.
The government said Trump "made clear his intent to issue public attacks related to this case when, the day after his arraignment, he posted a threatening message on Truth Social."
Trump's Aug. 4 post read: "IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I'M COMING AFTER YOU!"

(21,402 posts)Trump has no legal defense for the crimes he committed so he has another strategy:
1. Delay all of the prosecutions which hurts prosecutors and strengthens his case.
2. He needs the delay, time, to use his strategy of threats and intimidation.
Threats against the prosecutors, judges, witnesses, jury pool. Make all of those people understand that if they go after Trump he will go after them. he actually said that.
Trump wants people to fear for their lives. When Mitt Romney voted to indict Trump in the Senate he was forced to spend 5,000 dollars per week on security. Trump wants to poison the jury pool, make them fearful for their lives. he wants to poison the reporters from the MSM, make them fearful for their lives. It may just work.
3. Members of Congress who are complicit in the ongoing insurrection, like Scott Perry, appear to be immune from prosecution, they can continue to bring down our institutions withoit consequences.
3. Trump with his attacks on judges, prosecutors, public officials, law enforcement, the FBI, wants to create distrust in our institutions, wants people, the jury pool, to believe that our democratic institutions are corrupt, wants people to believe in the deep state.
Time mattered in investigating and prosecuting Trump, waiting a year and a half gave Trump the opportunity for his defense
Jack Smith is working to make up for lost time, we may have a Trump trial before the election, maybe.
