NBC News Vetoed Chelsea Clinton Marriage Equality Ads

Source: Buzzfeed

WASHINGTON — NBC News blocked backers of a key marriage equality measure in Washington State from using a video featuring Chelsea Clinton urging voters to support a state-wide referendum on gay marriage, BuzzFeed has learned.

Clinton, a vocal proponent of marriage equality, cut the video for a group supporting the Washington state measure, as well as a second video for another group. But NBC, for which Clinton works as a "special correspondent" since last November, "scuttled" the campaign, sources familiar with the ads said.

In the weeks before the November elections — where voters in Maine, Maryland, Minnesota and Washington voted on measures relating to same-sex couples’ marriage rights — such prominent support would have been heavily sought. Clinton had supported efforts toward the legislative passage of marriage equality in New York, going so far as to attend and participate in a phone-banking effort in Manhattan before the legislature approved the bill in June 2011.

Chelsea Clinton is thought by many in the Clinton circle to be eyeing a political future, and her public support for marriage was an early step in that direction. Her role at NBC News — where she focused on good-news stories, and avoids politics — also appears to be a step in the direction of public life.

Three people who saw the videos confirmed their existence to BuzzFeed. They were fully prepared, with the script approved in advance, one source said. The video wasn’t intended for TV broadcast, a second source said, suggesting they were instead to be used as web-based videos. The source added that multiple efforts had been intended beneficiaries of the former First Daughter’s support.

And they are very much right-wing leaning corporations ... BOTH of them

Cable-TV giant Comcast acquired control of NBCUniversal from General Electric in early 2011.

Chelsea Clinton is a very fine young woman from my perspective, and her views on marriage for all are admirable.

But, and it is a big But, she is an on air reporter for NBC. As a journalist she is not supposed to be taking sides in a political debate.

I doubt that any NBC journalist would get a pass for supporting any particular politician or cause in a paid political advertisement.

Not even the members of the MSNBC lineup get to appear on TV ads for their favorite candidates.

Chelsea's situation is exactly the same as Rachel's or Ed's or Chris's.

I am surprised that anyone, including Chelsea herself, thought that NBC would allow this of one of its journalists.

They are commentators. Personalities. Advocates. They don't try to give us two sides of a story; they aren't suggesting that we can see things either way...that the Faux POV is "just as valid" as the MSNBC one. They are advocates for their own personal viewpoints. Chris Matthews is a Roman Catholic Old School Tip O'Neill-trained Social Justice type, Rachel Maddow is a left-leaning liberal Democrat, Ed is the Union guy.

Chelsea was hired knowing full well who her daddy was and what her politics are -- her "pull" is that she is the daughter of a former President...just like Jenna Bush, who also got hired for the same reason-- to do fluff pieces and pull in an audience of curious gawkers.

...who have, a) destroyed journalism, and b) helped destroy our democracy and our economy.

Can't avoid the stench of privilege either. Would she be doing "color" for the NBCons if she wasn't the Clinton's daughter? Maybe. But probably not. In any case, she has seriously risked that a lot of people will see it that way--that she aced many poor, unprivileged young journalists out of a job because she has a famous name. If she wants a career with the corpo-fascist media, fine. You go, girl! But if she wants to springboard from one of the destroyers of democracy into elected office, frankly I don't think she can represent ME, and I would have trouble voting for her, knowing that the NBCons gave her a leg up. Why, would be my question. Why would one of these evil media monopolies jumpstart her career?

As for the NBCons getting all huffy about the perception of bias, it's just laughable. They lost legitimacy as journalists a long time ago--threw it away for war profiteering and 1%er propaganda. They aren't gonna get it back by banning Chelsea's ads on gay rights.

Some upthread posters ask, Do we want NBC to be Faux News where the line between journalism and advocacy has been erased and everything they broadcast is far rightwing "Big Lie" propaganda? I don't think these posters realize how far gone ALL corporate media is, in this country, nor how wrong it is that those who brought us the Bush Junta and the War on Iraq control our PUBLIC airwaves, not to mention print newspapers, books, magazines, movies, TV shows and radio stations, conglomerated with the weapons industry and other evildoers such as the financial industry.

We are the most disinformed, brainwashed people in the world. The corporate media is WHY. And their pretensions about objectivity are not just a joke, they are a disaster. That people are beginning to understand the bias of Faux News is encouraging. But that many people still believe in the "objectivity" of NBC News or the New York Slimes or the Associated Pukes is disastrous. It means they can lead us right off the cliff into more wars, into more stolen elections, and into yet more massive looting by the rich, while the very planet we live on is destroyed
