200 Gather at Joe Paterno Statue

Penn State students show support for ill Paterno

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP)—About 200 students and townspeople gathered Saturday night in State College at a statue of former Penn State Coach Joe Paterno, who is seriously ill at a local hospital.

Some brought candles, while others held up their smart phones to take photos of the scene. The mood was somber, with no chanting or shouting.

Paterno’s doctors say his condition has become “serious” after he experienced complications from lung cancer in recent days.

Paterno’s son, Jay, tweeted, “Drove by students at the Joe statue. Just told my Dad about all the love & support—inspiring him.”

The statue is just outside a gate at Beaver Stadium

Sometimes cancer, especially lung cancer, will lead to serious complications.

Oh, were you by chance referring to the continuing hero worship of Paterno after it has been revealed that he covered-up "man on boy" sex in his showers? That's a different kind of cancer...

I wouldn't want to be any of the victims - or anyone related to same - and be around that campus any time soon, given how berserk the place went when someone was finally punished for what happened to them in the first place. It wouldn't be safe for them at all, and will probably never feel safe again because of the hero-worship.

People in this country are REALLY f*cked up in the head.

South Carolina is a fine example of such.

PA: Philly on one end, Pittsburgh at the other, and a whole lot of Dixie in between. This is the PA that spawned Rick Santorum.

I challenge anyone to describe how they have done more to serve humanity than Joe Paterno.

He made a mistake. But HIS mistake wasn't to abuse little boys. His mistake was to do nothing. I have made that mistake myself. And I know how debilitating fear can be.

Yet Joe Paterno took a "cow college" and turned it into a world-class university. He changed my life, and I am not the only one.

He failed us once. No doubt about that. But I'd take Joe over any of his critics. Aside from one huge failure, Joe Paterno was a man you could count on to embody vigorous, proactive integrity.

Can you say the same?

involved little children.

I cannot share your assessment of Paterno. I think he died a loser. I think he lived as a coward--and that's at best. At worst, he was a deliberate enabler. He's responsible for not putting a child predator behind bars a decade ago. All those victims who might have been spared, had he only acted.

And, I know quite a few people who have "served humanity" more than a football coach who enabled his players and then enabled a child rapist.

Hell, I have served humanity better than him.
