Grayson: Walmart is ‘the largest recipient of public aid in the country’

Source: Raw Story

“Representative-elect Alan Grayson (D-FL) said Monday that he will put mega-retailer Walmart squarely in his sights during the next Congress for the company’s liberal use of public assistance programs to supplement their workers’ wages… Grayson called Walmart “the largest recipient of public aid in the country,” saying their low wages force workers to take food stamps, housing assistance and Medicaid just to get by.

“The taxpayer pays for the earned income credit,” he said. “The taxpayer pays for Medicaid. The taxpayer pays for unemployment insurance when they cut hours down. And the taxpayer pays for other forms of public assistance like food stamps. I think the taxpayer is getting fed up of paying these things when, in fact, Walmart could give every employee its got, even the CEO, a 30 percent raise and still be profitable.”

He added that while the health care mandate in the Affordable Care Act will help, “that’s just the start. In state after state after state, Walmart employees represent the largest group of Medicaid recipients, the largest group of food stamp recipients, and taxpayers shouldn’t have to bear that burden,” Grayson said. “It should be Walmart. So, we’re going to take that burden and put it where it belongs: on Walmart.”

Enough already on the low wages highly profitable enterprises that pay so little tax on these profits.

Taxpayers are on the hook because Wal-Mart doesn't pay their workers a living wage or provide basic benefits such as health insurance. This at a time when the company is reporting record profits.

This is what is wrong with American capitalism. It is all about the owners and no sense of common purpose. If the owners are rich and happy then screw everyone else.

I wonder how much it has cost taxpayers over the years to make Walmart's wages livable wages.

Then it's not a good business model. And it's the government's job and duty to create laws and enforce regulations in order to make sure that companies do not pass the buck to taxpayers.

and local economics. I watched in West Coast horror as I visited my sister in a regional town in Western Oklahoma once or twice a year and went from small shop owners who knew everyone (and some even recognized me, the visitor) to Going Out of Business sales and finally, at some point, our shopping trips were mostly to WalMart. There were ugly divorces as formerly prominent families split up, civil services declined, spouses having to move to the City to get jobs, farms consolidated and sold for single-crop agribusiness, kids went to college and did not return etc. There were many factors to be sure, but WalMart is at the head of the vulture class.

Small town Midwest Main Street barely hangs on. A few scattered shops, thrift stores, professional offices, but more shuttered quaint storefronts, corner brick/multi-story buildings (usually were banks), brick-lined streets ... not quite ghost towns, but not thriving.

Her inlaws are still there because they are the only insurance agency/brokerage in the region. Walmart hasn't gone into insurance brokerage...yet. It has been a scourge on our social order.

Good luck, Alan.

It's a little confusing to me what exactly he is saying. Either Wal Mart is the largest organization to receive public aid, or Wal Mart receives the largest portion of public aid.

Walmart sucks!

Anyone that must work for an employer than cannot provide for their worker's benefits sucks and they do not deserve the workers that they have!
