Indiana State Police Leader: 'I'd Legalize Marijuana'

Source: Associated Press

The head of the Indiana State Police is telling lawmakers he would legalize and tax marijuana if it were up to him.

State police Superintendent Paul Whitesell told members of the State Budget Committee Tuesday that he had followed the issue during 40 years in law enforcement and believed "it is here, it's going to stay."

... Democratic Sen. Karen Tallian has proposed decriminalizing marijuana and Republican Sen. Brent Steele said he would consider a similar measure during the upcoming legislative session.

and they get revenue... And less spent on policing a weed and subsidizing courts and jails and police... It's kind of a no brainer to most.

There's a whole lot of money in marijuana for drug dealers and their counterparts. Both of them usually make money off the customers, either by fining (and maybe imprisoning) some poor folks or buy charging them outrageous prices for something that could easily be made much, much less expensive.

Billions of dollars worth of assets have been seized as a result of the war on drugs. It's a huge business on both sides of the law. The question, ultimately, will be whether it is more profitable to legalize it and bring in the revenue... or leave things as they are. Either way, many special interests are involved and they tend to have more money than those of us who aren't special interests.

....considering that it's coming out of Indiana. The religious right up there will bury this guy.

But really, if this is coming out of Indiana, it definitely is a sign of things to come. Finally.

After it is legalized, you still have to pay for some costs of incarceration for decades to come.

Time to bring it on. 100% Pot Tax. Of course, pot prices will fall precipitously once we can grow it anywhere, so the tax won't even matter.
