Liz Cheney announces her latest plan to keep Trump out of White House

Liz Cheney, a former Republican leader in the House of Representatives before she was booted from office by GOP voters for leading the investigation into former President Trump, has vowed to do everything possible to keep Trump from returning to the presidency.
On Wednesday, after Trumps GOP rival, Nikki Haley, withdrew from the Republican presidential primary, Cheney announced her latest effort: a Political Action Committee aimed at helping President Biden get re-elected.
The GOP has chosen, Cheney tweeted. They will nominate a man who attempted to overturn an election and seize power. We have eight months to save our republic and ensure Donald Trump is never anywhere near the Oval Office again. Join me in the fight for our nations freedom.
The PAC is named The Great Task, after a speech given by Abraham Lincoln.

(21,639 posts)She believes in America - as a democratic, modern America.
Not the medievalist, Putinesque plutocracy most of the rest of her party is trying to bring about.
That was sure to make her some heavy-duty enemies.

(10,018 posts)This is the entire mission statement on her PAC's website:
Could it be any more careful to avoid saying it will do the only fucking thing that will do what she claims to want to do, i.e. keep Trump from getting elected?

(32,656 posts)She doesn't necessarily like Biden, but she recognizes that he's so much better than Chump. She knew that 4 years ago too. By speaking up now, Liz Cheney validates the feelings of so many OTHER Repukes who also hate Chump and who are also determined to see him defeated.
50 Shades Of Blue
(10,018 posts)The only person who can beat Trump - Joe Biden. Liz Cheney won't do that. That makes me think this PAC is just a calculated attempt to prop up herself. Its current mission certainly won't make any dent in Trump's numbers.

(2,739 posts)Plenty of time for her to explicitly support Biden closer to the election.
Announcing that at this point would just mean that ears and minds would be totally closed to her. By this approach, the work to educate and mobilize Republicathns and others has a real chance.
I just watched a video clip posted here of Nicolle Wallace's interview with a two-time Trump voter from Oklahoma who read Liz Cheney's book and was so impressed and moved by it and her willingness to oppose another Trump presidency at the expense of her political seat that he wrote an op-ed about it. https://www.democraticunderground.com/132112533
Our words are rejected out of hand but the words of Cheney come from a place where she gets them, which we don't. Their thinking is too foreign to our own, being based in an authoritarian view of morality. I am glad she is pro-democracy! We need every voice, every ally who works in good faith to defeat Trumpism.
50 Shades Of Blue
(10,018 posts)stance, she still won't go all the way and commit to supporting a Democrat for President in order to save democracy. They think highly of her for the former but they also recognize it's not enough for her and other non-Trumper Republicans to just come out against Trump, they must put democracy above their party if they really mean what they say, and work to elect Joe Biden. That person who read Cheney's book saw the light despite Cheney not putting democracy over party, not because of it.
It's only 6 months until the election. Cheney's new PAC makes it very clear that she's not going to come out and support Biden, she's just going to continue to be anti-Trump. And those are two different things. If she happens to give someone the idea that he shouldn't vote for Trump either, that's good. But it could be better, and I was happy to hear Wallace and Maddow recognize what I've been thinking.
SomewhereInTheMiddle
(285 posts)Perhaps her message will be for thinking republicans to simply stay home on election day, or more likely vote, but skip the presidential ballot. It is not the same as an affirmative vote for Biden, but it would potentially cause Trump to lose sufficient votes to lose the electors, at least in battleground states.
Putting "None of the above" as their choice for president.
I hate to say it, but I know Democrats that say they may do the same as they are not happy with Biden but want to support the down-ballot Dems.
If that is Cheney's plan, it is not as good as getting votes for Biden, but it could still help us.

(2,026 posts)When I was first taught this in high school I actually asked my Civics teacher if the founders were high. George Wallace had made a very strong third party run less than 10 years prior to when we were taught about this so in the political atmosphere of the day back then it was still fresh in peoples memory's I looked it up again and think I have it right and will also add, after 2016 nothing will surprise me.
. We don't have a runoff in our presidential election. It goes to congress if there are say 3 candidates and nobody gets 270. Then the shit storm hits. Each states congressional delegations get together and they pick who they think should be president out of the 3. The first candidate that gets 26 of states congressional delegations vote wins the presidency and importantly, those delegations are not bound to the delegates that represent the popular vote the states sent, they can elect whomever the hell they want of the 3. And it gets even better. The VP is chosen by a simple majority in the Senate between the 2, yes 2, VP candidates that got the most electoral votes in the general. If congress can't get 26 votes to elect a presidential candidate by inauguration day, the VP candidate the Senate picked is President until the gridlock in congress is addressed.
I'm telling you our founders were geniuses but I sometimes think they were tricksters from hell lol.
Edit: I think this is close to right.

(17,383 posts)There is NO ONE with the gravitas to win any state outside of Biden or Trump. The only way it could go to the House is if Biden and Smelvis tie at 269 electoral votes, and that's like drawing for an inside straight royal flush.

...some things are just bigger than domestic politics, like saving our democracy, Constitution and country from fascism...
...now is the time for democracy loving patriots of all persuasions to join arms in defeating this very real threat to our country a trump re-election would bring...
...when this is all over there'll be plenty of time to resume throwing rocks at each other but now is not the time...

I have no idea how she's planning to bury Trump, don't really care how and will continue to support her, Lincoln Project and anyone else who's a Republican and hoping to stop Trump.

(2,191 posts)I'm convinced that she made a deal with the J6 committee: she would be on it (giving them the ability to claim it was bipartisan) as long as they let Ginni go.

Had she actually put country over party back then, we might nuw control the house and the fear of TFG would have been removed from the R party because his insurrectionist allies would have faced real consequences.

(5 posts)Biden's main problem will be the now 4 third-party candidates.
Cheney can make a run for president on a rightwing third party and help Biden win by drawing all those disaffected GOP voters and other independents on the right.
