White House wants TikTok's parent company to divest: 'We don't want to see a ban'

The White House on Sunday reiterated support for a controversial bill meant to cut China's ties to TikTok by forcing the popular app's Chinese parent company to sell it -- or face an outright ban in the U.S.
At the same time, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said on ABC News' "This Week," the administration acknowledges the concerns of many American users.
"I want to stress again over and over that this isn't about a ban," Kirby told "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz. "We don't want to see a ban on TikTok. We understand there's a lot of people whose economic life relies on it."
He said the administration instead wants to see TikTok split from its China-based parent company, ByteDance, who staunchly opposes the legislation and maintains that the data fears around the use of TikTok are unfounded.

(9,245 posts)When right wing extremist billionaires buy a social media platform, they manipulate and control it to ensure the extremist views they subscribe to are seen, heard and promoted first and foremost.
I believe there should be a law that NO billionaire can own a social media company for this reason: simply, Democracy.

The bill is composed of less than two pages of text. People will listen for hours and read thousands of words about the bill and yet say they can't find the bill or don't have time to read it.
Then again, I have kids who spend all day on their phones and when it comes to an Internet search take far too long to look up a simple fact.

(629 posts)... the reddest herring I ever did see!
I'm no technological wizard, and correct me if I'm wrong, but if a pimple-faced incel sniffing his own farts in his mother's basement can commandeer someone's computer on the other side of the country, then there is little or nothing that will stop a determined Chinese hacker from gleaning whatever information he wants from a teenager's dance video, or makeup tutorial on Tik Tok. But national secrets? Probably not.
Get a fuckin' grip, Chicken Little! Spreading rumors that Biden will sign a bill banning Tik Tok is a tempest in a teapot created to get 18-year-olds' bloomers in a bunch so they won't want to vote for Biden, no matter what Tay Tay says.
Biden should just let this half-baked scam seep into the manure pile with all the other Republican bullshit, but only after Dark Brandon ridicules it to death.
Show 'em how it's done, Joe.

Kunlun originally bought Grindr in 2018, but the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) reportedly informed Kunlun that its ownership of Grindr was a national security risk, according to a March 2019 Reuters report. Kunlun did not submit its acquisition of Grindr for CFIUS review, which is perhaps why the committee made the rare request to undo an already-completed acquisition, reported Reuters.

the FT says the committee worried the Chinese government could use personal data from the app to blackmail US citizens which could include US government officials. And as of late, the US has been scrutinizing app developers more heavily over how they handle personal data. CFIUS blocked acquisitions of MoneyGram and AppLovin by Chinese companies in the past over security concerns.
Grindrs data handling practices have also come into question by other groups over the past few years. In January, a Norwegian nonprofit filed three complaints alleging that Grindrs Android app shares personal data with ad companies in violation of GDPR. In April 2018, a different Norwegian nonprofit found that Grindr shared its users HIV statuses with two outside companies, a practice that Grindr has since stopped.

But again, I only lived there from 2008-2023. What the fuck do I know?
Someone who went there on a "trip" knows more than someone who lived there 15 years, worked there, speaks the language fluently, and married a citizen that went through the same military training shit in HS and University.
Now, they do it in elementary schools.
