Judge Juan Merchan is expected at Monday's hearing to set a trial start date in the New York hush money case against former President Donald Trump.
Monday's hearing, scheduled for 10 a.m. ET, comes after the trial was postponed until at least mid-April. The trial was originally slated to begin on Monday, but Merchan delayed the start date by 30 days after Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, who brought the hush money case against Trump, said he did not oppose Trump's request for a delay.
But Braggs office last week urged Merchan not to delay the trial further, arguing that fewer than 300 out of 170,000 documents turned over by federal prosecutors are relevant to Trumps criminal defense. Trumps lawyers blamed Braggs office for not obtaining the documents sooner and requested Merchan dismiss the charges. The DAs office pushed back, calling the focus on the document release a red herring.
Merchan scheduled the hearing Monday to discuss document production in the case after Trumps lawyers filed a motion on the matter. Merchan at the time said he would set a new trial date if necessary upon ruling on the motion by Trumps lawyers. Trump is expected to be in court on Monday.

(22,037 posts)Good.
Any day Trump has to sit in a courtroom means he has to listen to the facts of his case. He can deny them as much as he wants but they are facts.
Added bonus: he wont be on the campaign trail spouting nonsense

As an aside, it seems almost quaint now that he was actually afraid of the "grab 'em by the pussy" fallout that he paid off women because he feared the effect of that behavior on the election. We've gone miles down the sewer since then.

The feds already prosecuted that a few years ago (which sent Cohen to prison for business and election fraud) and now we're talking a "state" case but as a state case, it's also the first "criminal" one of the 4 current federal and state criminal actions, that will come to trial (AG Tish James' business fraud case is civil), and won't be pardonable federally.

(108,035 posts)Former President Donald Trump will stand trial over a hush payment to Stormy Daniels beginning with jury selection on April 15, Judge Juan Merchan ruled Monday, rejecting Trump's request for an additional delay.
The case, which was initially scheduled to begin jury selection on Monday, was adjourned for 30 days by Merchan earlier this month, after defense attorneys raised issues with the late production of over 100,000 pages of potential evidence by federal prosecutors.
The judge decided Monday that the District Attorney of New York County is not at fault for the late production of documents from the U.S. Attorney's office for the Southern District of New York.
"The Manhattan District Attorney's office made diligent, good faith efforts" to retrieve appropriate material, the judge said, adding that Trump will not suffer any prejudice as a result of the late disclosure.
