Tammy Murphy is suspending New Jersey Senate campaign
Source: CNN
After many busy, invigorating, and yes, challenging months, I am suspending my Senate campaign today, she said in a video posted on X.
She was running for the seat currently held by Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez.

One Senate race I won't have to worry about.

(21,794 posts)considering Menendez is gonna try to pull a Joe Lieberman and run as an independent to take votes away from Andy Kim (assuming he wins the primary)
I am worried some ratfuckery is gonna take place. (and NJ doesn't exactly have the best reputation here)

(94,598 posts)Lieberman was actually popular in CT, even if he lost the Primary. Menendez is not, and is largely doing this to raise campaign funds for his legal defense.

(21,794 posts)Considering that there has been no GOP candidate to emerge in this race so far, maybe I was a little too pessimistic for my own good. Maybe.
Fingers crossed.

Both have barely enough cash raised to be considered serious.

Besides, Menendez has some gold bars he can sell in order to finance his campaign if the state Dems won't support him.

(1,144 posts)You see, I don't care about party affiliation. An indictment is enough for me to eliminate that person for consideration for any office.

(81,861 posts)Did she drop out because of her poll numbers or to protect the "party line" system?

(12,391 posts)It was to select who was going to get the "party line." Party line is the top of the ballot and those names at that position are more likely to win the primary. Tammy was at the meeting to speak and be anointed. Kim and another candidate showed up to state their qualifications. A couple of "goons" stood at the entrance to the room and wouldn't let them in.
In this morning's newspapers, editorials criticized Tammy for not standing up for the free speech rights of the other candidates.
The court case will continue, even though Tammy withdrew.

(2,503 posts)Because her husband is Governor, I always thought her candidacy had an unfair advantage. Phil Murphy's thumb was on the scale. Glad someone talked some sense into her, or into her and her husband. It reeked of nepotism right from the start.
