Rescue operation ends with six presumed dead (Baltimore)

Source: Washington Post

ll six missing victims in the Baltimore bridge collapse are presumed dead, the U.S. Coast Guard said, and the agency has ended rescue efforts.

“At this point, we do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath said a news conference Tuesday evening.

Search and recovery efforts for the people’s remains will resume at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

“The changing conditions out there have made it dangerous for the first responders, the divers in the water,” Maryland State Police Col. Roland L. Butler Jr. said. In the morning, “we’re hoping to put divers in the water and begin a more detailed search to do our very best to recover those six missing people.”

I hope their loved ones get some closure. I hope their survivors get some kind of financial compensation. So sad.

I love the cold, callous nature government and police have talking about death.

It is with heavy thoughts and prayers that I report to all the anxious, loving, concerned, wonderful, waiting human beings that, after hours and hours of many people risking their lives in tangled, mangled, steel and life-threateningly cold water with dangerous, swift currents and very reduced visibility with deadly obstacles at every turn, that all of us regret to inform that the conditions and the time in those conditions are incompatible with life and so we do not expect to rescue any more living souls from the wreckage. May your favorite deity comfort you.

I don't read this as cold or callous, and see it as a clear concise factual status. I honestly don't see your viewpoint at all.

12. They probably speak to the families individually; this was a press conference

A doctor would indeed say "my six patients are in critical state" or whatever.
