President Biden is set to be endorsed Friday by members of Cesar Chavez's family a mostly symbolic gesture, but one meant to send a signal to independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who's trying to invoke his own family's ties to the late union organizer and civil rights leader.
Fernando and Paul Chavez, the sons of the late co-founder of the United Farm Workers, are endorsing the president on Friday, the Biden campaign told CBS News. The family already has close ties to the campaign as Julie Chavez Rodriguez, the granddaughter of Chavez, serves as the president's campaign manager.
"The bonds of affection and respect for a president who by his character and actions consistently reflects the genuine legacy of my father, Cesar Chavez," Paul Chavez said in a statement.
"Today, my grandfather's bust sits in the Oval Office a reminder that President Biden understands the power of organizing and working people and recognizes the impact of my grandfather's legacy to continue to mobilize our communities into action," Julie Chavez Rodriguez told CBS News. "In an election that will determine the fate of organized labor, our Latino community, and our democracy, I could not be more humbled to accept the support of my family as one of many that will power us to victory in November ¡Si se puede!."

(47,770 posts)I think RFK Jr. can go pound sand. The Chavez family know the real deal when they see it and Biden is their man.

(46,312 posts)to individually and en masse to endorse Biden loudly and publicly, starting with Caroline Kennedy, daughter of John F. Kennedy. (I know we won't get Ethel Kennedy due to her aged status and it is her son.)

(16,657 posts)I've been anti-RFK Jr. for years (since long before covid) because of that. I'm curious about the other stuff now, though - will have to do some googling.

(22,241 posts)I read this book by RFK Jr., and was impressed with it. That's the only good thing I can say.
I think his own father would not vote for him at this point...... But then, Junior would probably not have turned out the way he has if his Dad was there to guide him.
What did you like about the book? My son read his recent book but I would not read anything by him. Unfortunately my son voted for Trump in the last election.

(22,241 posts)It was enlightening in regards to factory farming, and the effects it has on the environment. Obviously written before he lost his mind. I would still recommend reading it.

César Chávez defined extraordinary moral courage. He was a migrant farm worker who spent long, strenuous hours working in the fields. He and his fellow workers received unlivable wages and labored in unjust working conditions. Even then, a man of unyielding faith and an immovable spirit, Chávez saw every reason to pursue what he knew was the truth of this country: The people who put food on Americas tables and sustain our Nation deserve their fair share.
Alongside legendary activist Dolores Huerta, he founded the United Farm Workers. Ever since beginning their work in 1962, this union has led legendary marches, strikes, and boycotts. Chávez himself knocked on doors for years and fasted for weeks on end to bring light to issues facing farm workers. Together, they made historic progress, like earning farm workers the right to collectively bargain and ensuring safe working conditions and better pay. As a leader, Chávez not only empowered tens of thousands of farm workers to make their voices heard, he also inspired an entire generation of Latino leaders to forge a better future for all of us.
I am proud to keep a bust of César Chávez in the Oval Office. It is a daily reminder of our shared commitment to Americas workers and our labor unions. My dad used to say that a job is about a lot more than a paycheck it is about dignity. But if the paycheck is insufficient and the working conditions are subpar, a job can never offer someone the dignity they deserve. That is why since day one of my Administration, I have been working to build an economy that works for everyone one that grows from the middle out and the bottom up, not the top down. So far, the economy has created nearly 15 million jobs one of the greatest job creation periods in our Nations history. Unemployment has been below 4 percent for the longest stretch in 50 years. Americas support for unions is higher today than at any time in nearly 60 years. All of this progress is proof that when Americas unions do well, we all do well. "...(more)

(32,153 posts)I think a big part of it is religion - many are Catholic. Which is kind of bizarre, when I was growing up in Wisconsin a lot of Catholics there were pro-labor and voted dem. But now with the focus on abortion, it has gotten tricky. And of course republicans know this - it's why they started going after the evangelical vote in the 80s (or maybe earlier) anyway ...

(14,151 posts)Its the evangelical Hispanics (of which there are a lot in Texas now) who vote overwhelmingly Republican. Thats why New Mexico is so blue, because our Hispanics are almost all Catholic.

I think people have given up on politics, Trujillo said, standing in the parking lot with his wife, Sylvia. Seeing all this division, they simply dont care anymore.
The situation was stark, but not particularly surprising. This West Texas border town with more than 677,000 residents, most of them Mexican American is in a low voter-turnout county in a low voter-turnout state.
The county had 502,700 registered voters in the 2024 primaries, but only about 11% cast a ballot. Thats more than 7% lower than the last presidential primaries in 2020, and good for the second worst turnout rate in the state. In 2022 general midterm elections, 34% of El Pasos registered voters cast a ballot, about 10% less than in the 2018 general midterms.

(2,770 posts)My first march was during the United Farmworkers march on the Texas State Capitol in 1966 with my mom. We just did a few blocks joining the march on Congress Avenue south of the bridge. We'd been boycotting grapes for quite awhile by then. I was around 12.
