Omahas own Warren Buffett is the sixth-wealthiest person in the world, with a net worth of at least $133 billion, according to the Forbes 2024 billionaires list.
Its only the second year since 1995 Buffett has not been named one of the top five richest people in the world the other was in 2021, when Buffett also took the sixth spot after SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk made his first appearance on the list.
Ahead of Buffett on the list are Bernard Arnault, the CEO of fashion and beauty powerhouse LVMH, Musk; Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos; Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg; and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison.
Buffetts net worth has nearly doubled since 2020 from $67.5 billion in 2020 to $133 billion in 2024, according to Forbes. His net worth increased by $27 billion from 2023 to 2024. Buffett has said that more than 99% of his fortune will eventually go to charity, and he has gradually been giving it away over time.

(16,189 posts)It is control over companies. Unlike most portfolio companies, he holds them for decades and invests for long term growth. His railroad is a good example. He quadtracked key sections of it to go 70+ miles per hour instead of average 25 like others. More trains = less trucks = 90% less carbon emissions for moving freight.
He also is not weaponizing politics against us, the way Elon musk, Zuckerberg, the Uihleins, Koch brothers, Peltz, Wynn, Mercers, Bigelow, and Peter Thiel have been doing.
I read in a book about why it's okay to be angry about capitalism that Buffet is one of the evil oligarchs, which is absolutely not true.

(395 posts)In the case of Buffett a huge amount of that wealth is tied up in the shares he owns of companies he controls. It's not cash sitting in a bank or just random investments. I'm no Musk fan but his billions are mostly paper and are probably the most fragile of any of the billionaires. The only two companies he controls that are profitable are SpaceX and Tesla and Tesla is just a major screw up or two away from Wall Street punishing it.

As long as one family is suffering in poverty no billionaires should exist. Shouldn't multi hundreds of millions be enough even in end stage capitalism?
