MANILA, Philippines (AP) The Philippine president said Monday his administration has no plan to give the United States access to more Philippine military bases and stressed that the American militarys presence in several camps and sites so far was sparked by Chinas aggressive actions in the disputed South China Sea.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who took office in 2022, allowed American forces and weapons access to four additional Philippine military bases, bringing to nine the number of sites where U.S. troops can rotate indefinitely under a 2014 agreement.
The Biden administration has been strengthening an arc of security alliances in the region to better counter China, a move that dovetails with Philippine efforts to shore up its external defense, especially in the South China Sea.
Marcos decision last year alarmed China because two of the new sites were located just across from Taiwan and southern China. Beijing accused the Philippines of providing American forces with staging grounds, which could be used to undermine its security.

(2,047 posts)And outside the Shore Patrol gate was the infamous Olongapo City, a wild-west stretch of dirt road with swinging-door bar-rooms, endless brawls that spilled into the street day & night, battalions of working girls, and 45-minute hotels. Enough debauchery there to service every ship's crew in the Pacific Fleet for the entire Vietnam war.
No, I don't think the Philippines wants to go back to those days anymore, and who can blame them.

(2,047 posts)I just came in now and then on a Tin Can from Yankee Station in the Tonkin Gulf.
It was at your hospital that I got a temporary crown on a back tooth broken by a flying bottle of San Miguel in a bar fight that I may or may not have initiated.
I can't remember those specific establishments, but I think one was a legimate steak house where we'd fortify ourselves before hitting the drunken chaos of Olongapo.
To this day, I still don't know how those girls knew if you were a "butterfly" (cheated on them with another girl) or not.
Anyway, staggering back to the ship, "monkey meat" on a skewer from a street vendor always hit the spot.
Yes, that bbq was always good!
That was my very first duty station (1987) and I'm pretty sure it was just as wild as when you were there.

(26,299 posts)At least not to initiate an attack. Aid Taiwan if it's attacked by China? Maybe but otherwise those troops mean nothing and as for the Taiwan military being a threat like China claims it is? More bullshit.
