An NPR editor who wrote a critical essay on the company has resigned after being suspended

Source: AP

NEW YORK (AP) — A National Public Radio editor who wrote an essay criticizing his employer for promoting liberal views resigned on Wednesday, a day after it was revealed that he had been suspended.

Uri Berliner, a senior editor on NPR’s business desk, posted his resignation letter on X, formerly Twitter.

NPR would not comment on the resignation. Its head of public relations said the organization does not comment on individual personnel matters.

While Berliner said that he wishes NPR to thrive and do important journalism, he wrote that “I cannot work in a newsroom where I am disparaged by a new CEO whose divisive views confirm” problems that he discussed in his essay.

Might be because literacy is a necessary skill for a journalist. GQP traitors find that a difficult hurdle to clear.

It looks that way to me. I listen all the time, and I hear a news organization that repeatedly covers the truth that Trump lost the 2020 election, that Project 2025 and the Trump campaign platform is about ending democracy. They have covered rising authoritarianism and political violence too. Same with the PBS Newshour.

As far as I can tell, they are excoriated for not using the exact word "lie." But they certainly convey the truth without that word and if they used it, it could be a trigger to automatically change the channel for people who ought to hear the discussion.

I cannot imagine the void in vetted and reliable information that would occur if the effort to sow distrust and make it unlikely that those of us on the Left who value truth and reliability in our news sources will support NPR and other public media financially and by urging Congress to keep funding it.

There's room for improvement of course, but are those here on DU who are major critics of NPR just relying on their old takes during a previous era? Because right now, they are standing up for democracy every day. Not overtly, that's not the way of a major credible news organization. But by their topics and interviews, absolutely.

I hear the NPR-bashing enough here to realize that its funding and national support may be affected. With changes in tax laws and deductions making philanthropy for nonprofits much less robust, I am under the impression that funding for NPR may have declined. I for one would have a huge hole in my life without them. But as a retiree on a fixed income, what I can give as a sustaining member is finite. Sure hope everyone who has been negative decides to listen with open ears and minds and give them another shot.
