Pelosi scolds Boehner: ‘Figure it out!’

Source: MSNBC

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi doesn’t have much sympathy for her successor’s predicament. “Figure it out,” she scolded Speaker John Boehner about dealing with the fiscal cliff.

Pelosi cited her own experience dealing with President George W. Bush’s request to fund the unpopular war in Iraq. A fierce opponent of the war, Pelosi still wanted to ensure that the troops weren’t left high and dry. Her strategy: hold multiple votes. Democrats could go on record as opposing the war, but could still vote to fund it.

“Do you know what it was like for me to bring a bill to the floor to fund the war in Iraq?” Pelosi told reporters on Wednesday afternoon. “It’s tough, but you have to do it if you don’t want to put your members on the spot. Figure it out. We did.”

* * *
Working on the same principle, Pelosi urged Boehner to bring up a bill extending middle-class tax rates under a suspension of the rules, which would require a two-thirds majority to pass—something she thinks is possible. Tax rates for the wealthiest Americans would then automatically go up at year’s end. “It’s painful, but it’s the job he signed up for,” said Pelosi.

It is amazing the degree to which the corporate media tries to cover Boehner's weakness. The media plays up Boehner's statements that he is looking to compromise. The media then lets Boehner allege that President Obama is not moving fast emouugh and that its President Obama's job to keep on offering spending cuts until Republicans are happy. All the while, the media ignores the fact that Boehner is repeatedly looking over his back, which is why Boehner is suddenly back pedaling during negotiations and insisting on permanent tax cuts for the rich.

Edit to add: Once again it is very easy to find stories detailing all of the Republican attacks on President Obama, but it was a bit tough to find this story about Nancy Pelosi's statements regarding Boehner or Van Hollan's comments that Boehner is dragging things out until after the Speaker vote, since he is so vulnerable and the Republicans see any deal with President Obama short of complete capitalation as selling out.

"He is known to cry," explained the California Democrat, who was recently elected to lead her party once again when Congress returns in January. "He cries sometimes when we're having a debate on bills."

Pelosi went on to draw a distinction between herself and her Republican colleague.

"If I cry, it's about the personal loss of a friend or something like that," she said. "But when it comes to politics -- no, I don't cry. I would never think of crying about any loss of an office, because that's always a possibility, and if you're professional, then you deal with it professionally."

Glad you're with us! Thing is, though, he's also facing a new incoming Congress in which two of the biggest, loutish loudmouths - joe walsh and allen west - will be GONE, replaced by DEMS. And they're not the only ones. We gained eight seats! Which means they LOST eight seats. They may still be a majority, but they have no mandate whatsoever. They LOST seats in their precious House majority. They LOST seats in the Senate. And they LOST the White House for a second straight time. His power base is less, just numerically.

now. I responded on Twitter that Pelosi was a very strong speaker. The position isn't weak. Boehner is weak. The press needs to stop providing him cover for being awful, awful, awful at his job.

The press & pundits like to blather on about Reagan and Tip O'Neil. "Why can't Obama and Boehner be like Tip & Reagan?" Why??? Because Boehner sucks at his job and his caucus is filled with lunatics. Pres. Obama can't make a deal with Boehner because Boehner can't deliver the votes. Obama could deliver a significant number of Dems. Boehner can't do jack.

As being consistent to the interests of the cronies and Plutocrats who got him elected.

We must never cease our support of opposing forces on the hill. We must never cede an inch of state territory even in Michigan, until we get this nation back on track. The progressive nature of the United States during the 60s was lost in greed and corruption. We owe it to our kids to get it back.

NEVER give up.

That's what a teacher -- of either gender -- does to a naughty or misbehaving student.

That is what a parent--of either gender--does to a child who won't take guidance.

It's what any 'superior' (or someone who is acting like a superior, even if they're not) does to a 'junior.'

It's a didactic thing, not a gender thing.

Thu Dec 13, 2012, 03:26 AM
Dec 2012

A recent poll shows that Boehner is getting clobbered on the who's fault is it question on how the negotiations are going. Obviously they are getting their information from sources other than MSM so that is encouraging.

Another point, as the Press Secretary said today, Obama has a nearly 50 page proposal on the table and Boehner dismisses it as an "insult" then lays out his 2 page counter offer that calls for making all of the Bush tax cuts permanent and little else. Boehner is dead whether he stays as Speaker in January or not. He is so ineffective in not being able to "figure it out" that the backlash when we go over the cliff will force him to resign from Congress. Why he can't figure that out boggles the mind.
