Like zombies, they walk among us, texting, checking emails, talking, selecting music and, according to a study published Wednesday, oblivious to cars, trucks, lights, crosswalks and the concentration required to get through urban intersections alive.
Researchers, observing pedestrians in Seattle, found that nearly one in three people crossing the street at high-risk intersections was distracted by use of a mobile device.
Ebel, a pediatrician at Seattle Children's, said she is concerned about the conditioning of children, many of whom now have cellphones from an early age. She recalled the famous Pavlovian conditioning, where dogs learned to associate a snack with the ringing of a bell.
"I've seen people texting while horseback riding," she said. "When I see this kind of activity, it doesn't bear well for the future."

It probably wasn't the gadget makers and sellers who paid for this study.

(19,993 posts)It bothers me that so many people are now completely unaware of what is going on around them and expect everyone else to look out for them while they walk or drive around with their heads buried in some gadget.

(3,236 posts)and yes they are everywhere.
One of the last times I went out to a nightclub to see a band play there was a couple who were both surfing the internet and checking their e-mail on their own separate devices for TWO HOURS. I don't think they ever spoke to each other for the entire span of time that I observed them. They completely ignored the world around them.

(299 posts)And I really get sick of these people on the street, face buried in their phone, not looking where they're going and colliding with me. It really is extremely dangerous.

(11,364 posts)All of them were ignoring the others and silently playing with their phones. This went on for ten minutes or more. Why bother going out to eat with people if you (and they) are just going to sit there playing with your phones? I don't get it.

(29,503 posts)that prior to their text-orgy at the table, they asked me to remove my hat which I was wearing. I did so, and off they went into their cell bliss, leaving me behind. It was absolutely comical/tragic.

(11,364 posts)When I was a kid we used to run around and play make-believe and ride bikes and play ball and all kinds of things. Now the kids I see are all sitting there looking at a game. At least they're quiet. Catatonic, almost.

(23,867 posts)I grew up in the area. Hadn't been back since the days before internet. The days when people were just walking about like humans. But this time it was heads down, fingers punching keys. I saw it. But it wasn't until my 90 year old dad spoke up about it on the way home. And he's very much into the computer age. He ought to be, he helped start it.
